costochondritis

Posted by Becca on May 08, 2001 at 23:07:01:

My 12 year old son started having pain, we took him to the doctor and was told he had costochondritis. He also told us it is usally caused by a virus and would probably last for 7 to 10 days. Being curious, I got online to find out more. I learned a lot but have a few questions.

1. I didn't read any accounts of kids this age having this. How common is it in children?
2. Everything I read says this will not be over in 7 to 10 days. Why would he have told me that?
3.The pain in his chest started this morning, however, yesterday, he came home early from school and had severe constipation (hadn't had this problem before that I am aware of)also had an upset stomache. I attributed the stomache to the constipation, but then this morning when he
still had an upset stomache and the pain I was concerened. Could the constipation and stomache be connected? Common sense says "probably". but could you explain why?
4. The fight or flight and the bracing sound similar to anxiety issues, yes or no? his father deals with severe anxiety, could this be similar personalty types dealing (or not dealing) with stress in the same way? (didn't word this very well, do you understand where I'm going with this?)

Do you have any other information or suggestions to help me help my son?
Thanks for your time. It is really appreciated!
Becca

Hi Becca,
I do know that there is pain with constipation. When my daugher was 11 she was having pain under the ribs and she was having shortness of breath. This was especially at night when she went to bed. I took her to the Dr. and she told us that my daughter was so constipated, almost packed and that was causing the pain and the shortness of breath. We went home and began laxitives. Since being on this board I am beginning to understand that laxitives only treated the symtom, and we are working on her diet and how she handles stress. I hope this helps out a little.
Take Care
Barb

Hi, Becca.

I would certainly like to see any research that suggests that costochondritis is caused by a virus! GAH!

If you have read the archives about this, you know what causes it and that it is directly related to suppressed anxiety and fear. Eventually that same represion will cause LGS.

1. Becoming MUCH more common in children every year.
2. This doc doesn't like to think very much and just put you off.
3. Until he is willng to confront the causes, this is as good as it gets.
4. The tendency for one to respond to this repression is genetic and especially follows sex lines. In other words, fathers tend to have sons with similar problems and mothers tend to have daughters with similar problems.

The real problems is that now that this is happeing earlier and earlier in life, the problems tend to get a lot worse earlier in life.

Your problem is that 12 is nearly the worst age to resolve this since it is the age where the child thinks he knows everything and refuses to learn anything his parents might suggest. He will have to learn how to resolve this (archives) and no one else can do it for him.

After 14, he may become more amenable to learning and, by then, he will have suffered a lot more. Perhaps he will have suffered enough to actually learn and DO.

This will not kill him but it may make him wish he were dead before he is willing to do something about it.

Hope this helps.

Walt

Just yesterday I found out my friend's 8-year old son has it.

I've had it myself (34 yo). I haven't had it in a couple years now, but when I did, it would completely disappear within a week of meditation.
