I have had panic disorder for 3 years and now have costochondritis too!!!!

I have had panic disorder for three years now. I used to have about one attack a week. I was diagnosed with costochondritis (inflamation of the muscles in the rib and chest area) a few weeks ago. These two conditions do not go hand in hand. I now suffer from 5 to 15 panic attacks a day. A few nights ago I had a total of 9 attacks in one hour . I am being pulled from my sleep now with panic attacks. I know that the costochondritis is increasing my panic attacks since this condition causes a nagging and painful chest pain but my body still insists on having the panic attacks. I am taking zoloft and ativan but I am finding no relief. I really need a miricle. I can deal with one or the other of these conditions but not both. Any suggestions on how to deal with the pain caused by costochondrits would be helpful as well as any suggestions to assist me with my panic attacks. I really am a very cheerful person and I have a super life but these two conditions are making every day life difficult. Thanks for reading and God bless you!!
Missy

Hi Missy, I did suffer with with panic attacks long before I got costo, but I found when I got costo 3 years ago, it brought on more panic attacks. I am in a wonderful support group for costochondritis, if you're interested in joining, let me know.

The panic attacks and costo are caused by stress. Go to the glossary and read up on costochondritis, brain chemistry and SR (skilled relaxation). I don't believe Dr. SToll is a big fan of support groups for things like costo, since it's possible to be rid of it altogether.

Try large doses of easily absorbed magnesium to help with the symptoms while you deal with the bracing that causes it

Missy, How much flax oil are you taking? Flax oil is great for anxiety. Also look into b vitamins especially b-3. There is a possibility that some of your panic attacks are caused by your medications. Eat whole foods (not synthetic enriched foods) Stay away from sugar, and all refined foods. I believe you costochondritis is due to bracing and stress. Sr is a must but at this time may not be easy to start because of distractions. My message is very short but gives you some things to start with, and look at. Good luck

Hi, Terry.

IF there was no solution to costochondritis I could see the value of a "support group". In MY experience all a support group does, for this kind of simple problem, is support the attendees in keeping their problem and just living with it.

IF that is your goal, go for it!

Hi, Missy.

Since both of these conditions are basically caused by the same thing (bracing) why are you surprised that one has followed the other???

You must be new to this BB or you would already have resolved both.

Spend a few hours in the archives about bracing, brain chemistry and costochondritis and THEN decide how you are going to spend the rest of your life. "This is as good as it gets."---unless you learn and DO something about it.

Actually Dr Stoll, before I found you AND that support site I thought I was dying. The info you gave me and the info the support group gave me on this condition was wonderful. Even tho this is the diagnosis my Dr. gave me, I still felt it was more. The sternum pain was crushing, Ive never felt anything like it. Both you and the group relaxed me and showed me how to deal with this. Thanks again

Missy,
Hi, I am not a specialist with herbs, but I do know about my own experience with "panic attacks". Another natural way (it does not cost a dime and is very rewarding) is to kind of get intouch with your feelings. I do believe in herbs, as I take them myself. But...If you really want rid of your panic attacks you need a emotional cleansing. This means dealing with everything that has bothered you in any way. I think if you will try and retrack your "thought pattern" when you have your attacks you will find you are thinking the same thing that throws you into them. I would love to share my experience with you in more detail. Panic attacks are "Heaven Sent".
