Extremely afraid: Sons headaches...

Posted by Michele [20.829] on November 02, 2006 at 22:26:07:

My son has started getting severe headaches over the last few months... they were infrequent and always during barometric changes/weather changes.

Today however, the weather though cooler didn't seem to be a major change.. and tonight he said, "My head is hurting and I'm getting a tingly numb feeling on top" ...
he then seemed fine and we gave him a little benedryl in case it was becoming another sinus headache...

But what would cause that feeling? Tingly and numb on top but hurting sort of in a band and around his jaw?

FYI He is 12

my 16 year old son has had headaches on an off for the last couple of years. He complains of feeling electrical activity that's painful in his head and of pain that's 'all over' instead of in just one spot. The neurologist wasn't terribly helpful- seemed to think headaches could only be in one spot at a time instead of all over. MRI didn't show anything.
I had to come up with my own theory to try to give the kid an explanation. It's actually two possible causes that I came up with- one, that the brain is growing faster than the skull-perfectly possible at this time of life, I guess, but why wouldn't the pain be constant? (maybe because the skull gets pushed into growing a little by the brain pressure?-I don't know). Second would be brain swelling-we know this can happen in vaccine reactions (the high pitched screaming some babies respond to vaccines with)-it's possible it also happens in response, perhaps, to food intolerances. So, look to elimination diet or blood testing to try to cut problems out of his diet.
My son takes a couple of children's aspirin at a time (okayed by the diabetes doctor-the rule about aspirin for children is biological children (little kids), not legal children (kids aren't really children from 12-18, the law just calls them that). We're watching hydration -lots of water (no, don't substitute other liquids-see books by F. Batmanghelidj MD (see half.com) about water and real salt (sea salt with 50 minerals) as a help to ALL physical problems). The other thing that has helped my son is working on clearing out his colon. We were using Dr Schultze's intestinal formula, which helped some, but not enough. Now using Swedish Bitters- more effective). Both these things are oral.
Also have increased his intake of minerals with raw veggies like carrots and celery- we keep them around to snack on all the time. Got him some B-2 and B-12, as those were recommended in a natural headache cures book and am using the hot hands method that Dr Stoll describes (think you get to it from the home page).
I'll be looking for more hints in the other responses you get.

Michele,

If his doc finds nothing I would suggest a trial of acupuncture. Let us know how he does.

my son had a bad taste in his mouth, besides the headaches, so we had blood tests run for kidney function at the diabete's doctor and had a dentist check him out. Since no one had further suggestions, I thought to try acupuncture- called the one recommended by people at our food buying club. The acupuncturist was also a chiropractor. He examined my son and said acupuncture wouldn't help that he also had scoliosis, and that we should see a neurologist and and orthopedist (he declined to work on my son in either modality). Once I made those appts- 2 months before the orthopedist, and the neurologist wouldn't schedule till after THAT appt, so a month later, I called back the chiro/acupuncturist and he did some chiro on the kid, but still said acupuncture wouldn't help.
I think it was mama bliss who posted about going to an acupuncturist in Australian who refused to perform acupuncture for a problem which had PREVIOUSLY been help with acupuncture.
14 years ago, in my old city, I tried to make an appt with an alt health practitioner and ALL of them wanted diagnosis from a conventional doctor first (like, what's the point?-I was looking for a CHOICE of practitioners).
Weird stuff going on in alt health-16 years ago, the midwife I hired for my first home birth had 3 women give birth that weekend- she wound up delivering 2 of them in the hospital and was pushing me towards that (I refused). Got a different midwife for subsequent births.
It can be weird trying to find an alt practitioner who actually does what they claim to. The chiro/acupuncturist at least didn't charge when he declined to work on the kid. Bliss, or whoever posted about the other acupuncturist was complaining the person wanted to be paid for the visitwhile not working on the problem.

My daughter started having migraines at 16, we think because of a head trauma from snow boarding. We did the nerologist route and all the tests to make sure she didn't have a brain tumor or anything else going on. She used the migraine medications and Topamax. After awhile non of those treatments worked. Then we went to the natural. Crainal sacral adjustments worked wonders for her for about a years time.

I did lots of research and got onto several boards chatting with other people about migraines. What I discovered is many kids start having migraines at 12 because of the hormone level changes.

Little children also get migraines, many of them because of stress. After going through bio-feedback the headaches are almost eliminated.

One thing I do suggest after going through all the tests medications, is DO NOT let them put your son on
topamax. It has many side effects and only works for a little while. The Drs. keep increasing the dose....to keep up with the headaches. It also is hard on the kidneys and pulls the calcium out of your bones and teeth.

Thanks, Ann.

If it was easy everybody would be doing it. Sounds like you have been getting good advice. Have you read the scoliisis archives? Has your son been prscticing serious SR at least twice a day and have you had him see a Rolfer in consultation? Scoliosis could easily be behind the headache.

Thanks, Barb.

Many of the post traumatic headaches are best treated by a cranial osteopath!
