My 10 year old has a bad tooth, its been weak ever since it appeared to be honest. On Friday the dentist looked at it & said its infected & he will need antibiotics. I have a real antibiotic phobia too & can't stand the thought of giving it to him. He will eat raw garlic, but not sure how much to give him. Also it must have been infected a while because he has had slight pain in it for ages & its the same today as it has always been. What shall I do??

Puting a little cayenne pepper in warm salt water and holding it around the tooth, should kill the pain and infection in about 15min or less. They will draw blood and lymph to the tooth. I would go light with a kid to see how much heat they can tolerate. The milder it is the longer it might take but any amount should do something.

Hi, Aston.
My first impression is that his dental hygeine must be very poor to have something like this at his age. Also, that his checkups must have been either noenexistant or very far apart. It is possible that he was unluchy enough to inherit terribly soft teeth but regular checkups would have told you that.
This is an end game and you will be lucky to save the tooth. When teeth are lost at this age all the remaining teeth are at risk without very expensive procedures.
There are few options now, this late in the game, and antibiotics are probably his only option. This is what prevention is designed to prevent.
See the dental archives.
Let us know what happens.

I would have no problem substituting raw garlic for antibiotics in case of infection (and have done it before when anti-biotics were prescribed).
4 raw cloves equals one dose of antibiotics. James Duke recommends taking between 9-12 a day (for an adult). You can mix the cloves with grapefruit juice to mask the flavor a bit. He can also hold part of a clove directly on the tooth, even for a minimal amount of time.
Also add echinacea tincture, 1tsp whole herb/root tincture 3x daily until the infection passes, then 60 drops 3x daily for a total of 3 weeks. You can put echinacea tincture also right on the tooth. The echinacea will help numb it too.
I would start him on an herbal calcium/mineral formula and check his diet bigtime.

They were (shamefully) for a lot of reasons a long way apart! When he was seen a couple of years ago, we were concerned that the second teeth were coming through slightly stained & mottled. My in-laws were up in arms saying it was the Soy milk he had had from 6 months, yet the dentist at the time said it was because of fluorosis (my son admitted he used to eat toothpaste unseen)This new dentist now says that diagnosis is rubbish & it wouldnt be that. Anyway luckily his elder & two younger siblings teeth passed with flying colours & none of them will be missing further checkups. I will of course let you know what happens, he is off for root canal treatment on Tuesday.

Actually Thessa he is on herbal Calc & Mag. Also his diet is good because of his hyperactivity, although he can not take a multi-vit because of the Bs. Of course as much as I tell him to keep cleaning his teeth..
I have echinacea in & will try that.
As for the garlic he has no problems eating it raw, 6 cloves a day do you think??

I have a young relative that recently had 4 root canals at 10-12 years of age. In fact many of my generation in my family are in poor health and we have fewer offspring than our parents' generation. I'm reminded of Pottinger's cats ...

Good that he's on the herbal cal/mag.
Yes, 6 cloves a day would be a good start, then you can monitor and adjust from there.
You can also press a little bit of juice from the garlic, add some of the echinacea tincture, then dip a piece of cotton or a cloth in the juice and place on the gum/tooth.
Have you investigated possible food allergies?
