Infected Tooth.....Any suggestions ?

Posted by DeeDee [6.3187] on December 14, 2006 at 04:45:36:

My adult son has an infected back tooth. He went to the dentist who wouldn't pull it until he had taken antibiotics for a week (which he is currently doing) Another dentist said the same. He is in a lot of pain...trying home remedies...also heat & cold (separately) to no avail. He is taking extra strength Tylenol, but it doesn't help much. Any suggestions?

I just knew Charles would be here with tobacco....but he didn't explain HOW!??

I have heard Peroxide will take pain from infected teeth....part water & let it set in the mouth for 10 min. if you can....worked for a friend!

Good luck

hot water bottle. no cold. swish salt water in the mouth. rub sea salt on the gum where the pain is. Prick the bag of the abcess to let it drain, or chew gum on that side until the abcess starts draining-once it's drained, the pain will stop. Keep using salt water and salt until healed to prevent re-infection.

Yes, either of those dentists could have let that abscess out and I wonder why they didn't? Sometimes it will drain on it's own but it has to be close to an exit point. It takes a much stronger med for that kind of pain. Call the ER of your local hospital and ask if they can handle it or call more dentists.

some cayenne pepper and salt. Mixed in water will help, but geting some dry on the site will work the fastest and best. It will burn more.

DeeDee,

At this stage his only option is what has been recommended. The best approach is PREVENTION which he has to neglected for this to happen. His dentist will instruct him about this but the likelyhood is that he will ignore the warning.

As my German extraction father always used to say: "Ve get too soon oldt and too late smardt."

Thanks for all the helpful tips. Of course...it is much better now. My son says he brushes up to 4 times a day...also flosses daily. He doesn't have insurance so he puts off going to the dentist. BIG mistake !

To Charles.....

What kind of tobacco do you use & do you add water to it? Also, wouldn't it be NASTY tasting to someone who hates tobacco?

Thanks, DeeDee.

I am really ashamed to admit this to you BUT, as prevenion oriented as I am I still did not bother to learn proper dental hygeine technique until I was 60 years old and my teeth were about to fall out with my severe diabetic chronic gum disease! I now have learned and it has been under perfect control for 10 years.

My bet is that his technique is flawed. At his age that is, by far, the most likely reason for his infected tooth and not something else.

I start with a Sonicare, progress to a "wrap around" flossing technique, then do a toothpick to the gum line, then use a Water Pic on high twice, and then Listerine mouth wash for 30 full seconds and end up with those little between the teeth brushes without flushing out the mouth wash. The whole thing takes less than 5 minutes and has taken my terminal gum disease to perfect for the past 10 years. This only has to be done once every 24 hours since, pathologically, pre-plaque only has to be disturbed once every 24 hours to prevent it from becoming actual plaque.

Hope this helps.

Walt
