Supplements or other help for receding gums?

Posted by Nutmeg on April 02, 2002 at 00:09:00:

I have a couple of molars on one side that have for years been very sensitive to heat and especially cold and to all the stuff that dentist and hygenists do to them. Recently I noticed this same effect has started on one of my top front teeth. The dentist has been monitoring the depth of the gums for several years but offers nothing in the way of help except to suggest using toothpaste for sensitive teeth and not using anti-plaque toothpaste. I used Tom's toothpaste for several years and switched to the formula for sensitive teeth which helped only a little. I actually only use toothpaste once a day now and brush gently with a soft-bristled brush. The rest of the time I use a tooth oil that is just a mixture of oils--no other additives.

Are there any supplements that help rebuild gums? I don't have any bleeding, redness, or inflammation, just the receding gumline. I couldn't find anything similar in the archives.

Thanks,
Nutmeg

Hi, Nutmeg! I remember a big discusssion about this before the board went down. Two supplements that were recommended were vitamins C and E. I don't recall anything else, but it's a start if you're not taking either of these now. High amounts of C and 400-800 units of E per day to start.

I believe that Dr Christopher has a gum/tooth formula and he swears by white oak bark. Might be worth checking out?

Thanks, that looks promising and I like the price. nmi

Naya, I'm glad your memory is intact! I do take Vitamin C every day--about 4g. Does that sound like enough? I also take a tocotrienol/amino complex in powder form. I'll find out how much vitamin E it provides to see if I need to supplement.

Thanks!

Personally, I found that the E made more of a difference at 800 units a day.

Hi, Nutmeg.

IF the vitamin C is esterified this is just about the right amount.

I, personally have found the 800 units of E to be best for me. I have not had to go to CoQ10 but would do that next if I had any trouble.

The most effective thing is great oral hygeine AFTER a good cleaning by the dental hygeinist--followed by regular cleanings till you can see the results and the dentist says you can go on longer and longer without followups.

Let us know how you do.

Walt
