Dr. Stoll, I respect you greatly and have benefited alot
from this board.
I do think sometimes though you underplay the genetic
factor. My brother and father have both suffered from
generalized anxiety and/or panic attacks all their adult
lives, as have I. Yet it seems when someone seeks help
for this, the only advice offered has to do with diet,
nutrition, etc.
I truly believe that no matter how perfectly I had eaten,
practiced SR, etc., I would still be suffering from
generalized anxiety today. How can one fight ones own
genetic makeup?

Dr. Stoll does talk about people who are born genetically at "the bottom of the bell curve" maybe you and your father are with regards to issues of brain chemistry. That's all I can think of if serious wellness does not help much or at all.

I take your point, but as someone else who has lifelong (and familial) problems with anxiety and panic my belief is that your genetic makeup can make you predisposed, but that doesn't mean you are helpless to do anything about it. It just means you start at a different baseline and have to work harder at getting and staying well. Good luck.

I think serious wellness helps everything, but when issues
like this are showing up since childhood I don't think
it can be attributed completely to wellness issues. I
guess it is possible to be so far at the end of the
curve that you will suffer pretty much regardless of what
you do.
I guess my question is: is it EVER appropriate to
actually take medication? I have resisted doing so for
many years, but it is getting very tough to be happy with
this constantly being an issue, day in and day out.
My brother has taken Xanax and now Paxil for probably ten
years. He seems to be doing OK, I just wonder if reducing
my anxiety would improve some of the physical problems I
am having. SR just doesn's seem to be enough, alot of the time it's tough for me to even relax enough to get
ANYWHERE with SR.

Hi Dave,
When most people say something is genetic, it means they think there is nothing they can do about it. So they don't. I hope this isn't the case with you.
When it comes down to things like you are talking about (anxiety, depression, etc.), I wonder how much is genetic and how much is learned.
Have you tried psychotherapy?
BTW, my anxiety was helped by a combination of psychotherapy, SR, diet, and exercise. It took a long time, but I'm happy to say that I am rarely anxious any more.
Best wishes,
Happygal

I would try SAM-e or 5-HTP before the xanax or Zoloft ect. You might even try to find a doc to give you L-Tryptophan. These can help while you learn to do EFFECTIVE SR. The drugs I would use as a LAST resort and in the end, however, will never be the long term solution.

I would try some of the natural products first, also! You can have a Seretonin deficiency but not a Paxil deficiency!

Thanks, Dave.
Even though the exact % can still end up varying by a couple of %s the die is pretty much cast already: 20% of chronic conditions (including anxiety) are due to genetics and the other 80% is due to what we choose to do with our genetics.
Of course, it ia a LOT more comlicated than that. For example, if one's genetics breaks down early in life, that person will have a lot more years to develop dysfunctional psychological coping mechanisms that will make him worse.
Hope this helps. Science is just now beginning to sort this out. We will still be doing it 100+ years from now.

Dave: Up until six weeks ago I had resigned myself to the fact that I cannot relax. I come from a long line of relatives that are emotionally and mentally disturbed.Even though I am 50 years old I haven't worked much because I couldn't handle the stress. I tried so many techniques that I felt like a failure until I found Centerpointe. Look this website up on your computer. This is the most profound phenomenon that has ever happened to me. I don't have to do anything-the CD's I listen to induce the relaxation response. Yes, I have tried many other types of tapes that claim they will relax but not for me. You don't have to tense muscle groups, you don't have to chant, you don't have to concentrate, just sit and waves of calm come over you. Check out their website www.Centerpointe.com Marian
