5-HTP, use for depression and anxiety

Posted by Janet on June 19, 2000 at 17:26:06:

After checking the archives, I found very little information on 5-HTP. What I did read was mixed results for some people. A few said they felt "hyped" after taking melatonin or Kava (which I did too) but I wonder if anyone experienced this same phenomenon on 5-HTP? If so, what dose did you take? I did read that a smaller dose can be effective for some people and that it isn't uncommon for those with anxiety disorders to initially feel more anxious at first but that with continued treatment, sensitivity to the additional seratonin decreases. Can anyone verify this? Thanks for your help.

I think you might not be getting a response on this because we don't tend to focus too much on supplement type stuff here, especially as far as anxiety and depression. You might want to look into the Articles on health to get you started on what we "promote" here.

Walt's recommendation for being healthy consists of a "3-legged stool" of habits that will keep you from suffering from a multitude of chronic problems. These habits are: skilled relaxation, eating a healthy (whole foods) diet, and getting exercise on a regular basis.

Taking stuff to relieve symptoms is great in the short run, but in the long run, we try to regain and maintain our health by following this recipe for wellness.

This was a really long, roundabout way of saying that probably nobody knows the answer to your question(s)!

Be well, Janet.

Janet,

I have had much experience both with 5HTP and Kava Kava. Also, Melatonin. And two many NP's prescribing expensive herbal and vitamin remedies.....

In the beginning when I was suffering the worse, my NP had me on 300 MG of 5HTP, 3 times a day. Also, Kava Kava for sleep w/ St. John's Wort, 900 MG., nightly. I found that the mixture of Kava Kava and St. John's wasn't for me...took me months to figure this out as I had insomnia real bad. It was only after stopping the cycle of the Kava Kava and St. Johns Wort, did I start winning the battle with anxiety and sleep! The 5 HTP is used in Europe for helping people to lose weight in theraputic doses. (I have lost a lot of weight due to malabsorption w/ LGS.) And when I found this out, I knocked back the dosage of 5 HTP. Since, listening to Dr. Stoll with the three leg approach, I have stop most all meds and mega doses of herbs and vitamins, etc. I still take multivitamin, B Complex, an herbal for hormone balance and I have knocked the dosage of 5 HTP down to 50mg., two times a day. It is good for anxiety but I have finally after 6 months begun to see some results from diet, exercise and SR If you need the 5 HTP for now, I would say go ahead. But, the only way out of the situation (Wow, sounding like Dr. Stoll here!) is to learn all that Dr. Stoll and others have suggested to you. I have a long ways to go but at least now, I can see the beginning!

Hope this helps you and you are feeling better soon.
Carroll

Thanks, Carroll.

Your note will help those teetering on the edge to help themselves.
