Re: Dr. Stoll or anyone, HELP: depression/anxiety

Ask Dr. Stoll about mg. The testing is fairly specialized I believe and the "normal" range is often far below an individual's personal range.

Dear Holly,

Peter has some good ideas.

From MY perspective I have the following:

When she is in this condition, my tapes are not likely be of much use to her other than she can put a face to a name and have a feeling about whether I might know of what I speak.

IF she can get up the energy to DO some reading (something that MAY be beyond her energy level right now)
she should focus on things that were written about HER:
1. "Brain Allergies" by William Philpott, MD, and,
2. "Mind as Healer, Mind as Slayer" by Kenneth Pelletier, PhD.

Next, one of the most common causes of depression is the dose of Valium she is on.

Surely, the magnesium should be checked out. However, were she MY mother, I would get her started on at least 2 grams of magnesium aspartate a day right away. It could not hurt her &, even at this small dose given orally, might help.

Unfortunately, neither you nor I can solve this for her. We can point her in the right direction but she is going to have to put out the effort to learn enough to start climbing out of this hole in which she finds herself.

It is very helpful (AND ENCOURAGING) to know that her present personality is not what she was years ago. That means that this IS resolvable.

St. John's Wort is not supposed to be taken with MAO inhibitors. I'm not sure which meds fall in that category, but I'd be awfully careful about taking SJW with any meds unless I checked with a pharmacist or dr. first.

Hi Holly,

I suffer from depression. I was taking the SJW for 2 months. It was great at first but unfortunately, it stopped working for me as my depression got worse instead of better.

I am now on Luvox. It is better know to help people with Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD). I have only been taking it for two weeks but I have found an improvement. I cried all the time, had no energy and really no will to live anymore. My husband has been very supportive (which is very important with depression). I have found several good sites on depression. It is worth reading up on it. A friend of mine who has suffered depression for years has been my mentor/support person. I can talk to her about it and not feel like I have an "problem". Depression is very common but unfortunately people look at depression as a bad thing. My friend suggested I keep a journal. I have also been told to make notes on when I feel down in the day. That way, I can try to figure out why I feel worse at certain times a day.

Be supportive towards your Mom. This is not easy on her. Make sure she knows that she is loved, needed and wanted. Encourage her to do things with you. It will take some work on your part but in the long run you will see her like she was before. It is not an overnight cure... depression is serious.

I hope I have helped you out.

Carole

P.S. Dr. Stoll, this is my first time on this BB (on any for that fact) and I think it is great! Keep up the great work!

Dear Carole,

There are 3 references that have been written about you (Didn't know you were famous did you?):

1. "Brain Allergies" by William Philpott, MD.

2. "Mind as Healer, Mind as Slayer" by Dr Pelletier, AND;

3. "Nutrition & the Mind" by Gary Null, PhD.

Once you have these under your belt, when you are ready to know what to DO about your process, a copy of my book would be helpful (link on this page).

THEN, if you have more questions, write again.

As you get well you could help others, to realize that their conventional docs are not telling them about all their options, by sharing your experiences & insights with the bb participants.

Walt
