Hello. I am breastfeeding an almost 16 month old, and not even a week ago, I eliminated all sugar from my diet. Already it seems I am experiencing some great benefits mentally, but am itching, and am having some arthritic symptoms. The thing I'm concerned about most is a bad taste in my mouth--almost a chemical taste. Do detox symptoms usually appear so quickly? Having had several major surgeries in past years, I am wondering if it is possible that drug gunk is already coming out of my system (I read something about that somewhere), and if it is, is all the yucky stuff going into the breastmilk? My little boy has been a little more fussy than usual, has had a runny nose and has been itching his ears some since I started this (but the pollen count is high where we live too, so that may be part of it). Is it possible that this could actually be harmful to a baby? I'd love to hear your ideas....
Thank you very much,
Hope

Hi, Hope.
Congratulations on your determination.
Personally, I would never try to get rid of sugar without having Beth's book in hand. The chances are that you are having some symptoms of withdrawal that you would no longer be having IF you had Beth's book.
Detox can begin as early as 24 hours. The chances are tht your baby IS getting some of this stuff. You can reduce that by boosting liver function (see liver archives), doing saunas and drinking a lot of water (at least 8-8oz glasses every 24 hours).
Let us know how you do.

Thanks, Dr. Stoll--
I will try what you said, but until I do get my hands on Beth's book to reduce symptoms, do you think the breastmilk is toxic enough to warrant my either going back to my old diet (ugh), or stopping nursing altogether (which I'd really rather not do)? I certainly don't want to be doing my son harm through my own zeal to feel better!
Hope
P.S. Dr. Stoll, over the past few years, I have learned SO much from this site. Thank you for what you do. You have certainly been a blessing in my life!!

Thanks, Hope.
Since this stage will be short lived, and the benefits will far outweigh the dangers to your baby , I would not worry about it.
Namaste`

I had a similar situation with detoxing and nursing except that my son was older than yours. One thing you might do, if you haven't already, is to try to consume some foods like kefir or cultured vegetables. The vegetables will introduce beneficial lactic acid and enzymes that your son can benefit from as well. (I believe he can get it through the breastmilk.)
If you buy the kefir instead of making it, buy Helios brand (not Lifeway). For commercial cultured veges there is live "Zing" salad (don't know the brand but some health food stores carry it) or Deep Root brand sauerkraut or beets or daikon (stinky but delicious). I was never a fan of any of these veges in general until I tried Deep Root. Now I can't get enough.

Rockie,
Thank you for the advice. I'll look for the kefir and Deep Root. It's nice to know that someone else has done this while nursing!

I forgot to mention that I've read that the first child a mom nurses gets all her accumulated/stored toxins and that the second child fares much better. That said, nursing is still better, in my opinion, because formula has toxins without all the emotional and physical benefits of breastfeeding.
I think the best we can do as we go forward is to support our children's immune systems' as much as possible. Good organic food, non-chlorinated water, fresh air, sunlight, avoidance of chemicals in and around the house, massage, love, etc.
PS It's great you are still nursing. You go girl!

Hi, Hope. I wanted to help you before but couldn't think of anything other than to say I am breastfeeding and doing the PWFD as well. I've started SR, too, of course. Anyway, I thought the La Leche League can answer nearly anything about nursing though I agree with the advice you've already received.

Nocolon--Thank you! I may email you at some point to compare notes. I am concerned about one thing I found on the LL site about low-carb dieting and toxins in breastmilk...
but I am especially interested in your id "Nocolon". You wouldn't happen to have a J-pouch, would you? If that is what your name means, I am a total "nocolon" too! (surgeries in '91 b/c of severe ulcerative colitis). : ) (I am 34 with a 7yo and 16mo.)

Small world huh? I had the same thing done when I was a teenager. I'm 37. I'm planning on one more baby but want to work on my health first.
