Hello again,
It's been a while as I have been working on my "3-legged stool". (There is another Maggie posting here, that has not been me). I am now seeing a M.D. in my area who practices holistically. He does not prescribe meds, and he is very focused on nutrition, digestive health, and mind-body interaction. I am beginning a class in mindful relaxation this month, as well as practicing a modified elimination diet based on the book "The 20 day recovery diet". We have sent lab tests in for thyroid, adrenal/stress, parasites, and yeast. He has also suggested a multitude of supplements, many of which are b-vitamins to help with my "methylation pathway". Also I am taking substances to help with liver detox, and fibersmart to help with digestion. Fish oil, 4000mg twice a day, and magnesium as well. I am wondering if either of you have heard of treating this methylation pathway as an approach to RA, which I understand is what the supplement SAM-e works on (just much more expesnive than these b-vitamins separately), and whether or not this has shown to be an effective approach to RA? SHAPE, do you consider Fibersmart to be a good alternative to corrective-a, which you recommended previously but I shouldn't take while still nursing a baby? Other comments on the protocol are also welcome and appreciated. Thanks!

Hi Maggie - I haven't personally used Fibersmart but if it contains fiber, it's more than likely going to cause you to become constipated (a bloated feeling). Corrective-A or Chomper (my wife likes chomper better than the corrective-a) causes your bowels to move, which is great for those individuals who are not experiencing the required 2 to 3 bowel movements everyday. However, if you are experiencing diarrhea, then a fiber supplement would be great. I don't like to put this "Negative Thought" in your mind so please remember, that this is just my opinion, however, what this holistic doctor is putting you through (test) and suggesting that you take, reminds me of the "Many" ones that I went to, who ended up backrupting me with no positive healing results. I know what it takes to reverse RA because I was crippled with it for over 10 years. I simply hate to see others get taken advantage of like I was. If you want to, please keep me informed of what he is suggesting to you and maybe I will see more "Red Flages". What is he suggesting that you take to detox your liver? Also, be careful about how much fish oil you take because Vitamin-A can be dangerous at high levels and if you are getting any sun, you could easily get an over-does. Take your fish oil before going to bed so that the oil doesn't interfere with your other supplements that you take throughout the day! * S.H.A.P.E. *

Thanks for your reply. I also have your protocol, and may need that later if this doesn't seem to take me in the right direction. This dr. gets rave reviews around here, including from several folks with RA. And since he's local, I figured I will follow his process first and see. He's also very open to anything I want to do, so I may be able to incorporate some of your suggestions into my overall wellness plan. The Fibersmart is made from flax fiber, and contains probiotics as well. I would say I am more constipated than the reverse, so it may not work for me. But, today it did not cause any bloating and I did "go" shortly after taking it. I am unable to take the corrective-a right now since I am still breastfeeding. I'll guess I'll see how it goes, (pun intended!!!) For liver detox, I am taking n-acetyl cysteine (500mg twice a day) and alphalipoic acid (50mg twice a day). As for the fish oil, I thought only cod liver oil contains vitamin a? I am taking regular omega-3 fish oil capsules. Is this still a concern? Thanks again!

Maggie - This guy does sound promising so please keep me posted on your progress because I'd love to find other treatments/suggestions that will actually help to reverse RA. You caught me on the fish oil/vitamin-a connection. I had just finished talking to someone about cod liver oil and my mind carried it over to fish oil so the amount of fish oil that you are taking is fine. Have a wonderful weekend Maggie! * S.H.A.P.E. *

Congratulations, Maggie, for having found a compatible physician.
In MY opinion, the cheapest and safest thing are what should be done first: Skilled Relaxation, underwater aerobics, and a strict whole foods diet, modified as found to be effective by trials of elimination/provocation testing. Supplements at this stage would be glucosamine and omega 3s.
THEN working with the methylation pathways IF THAT IS NEEDED is the next thing to do.
Hope this helps.

Maybe Dr. Stoll will comment on this or you could start a new thread. Sometimes M.D.s are overly cautious with breastfeeding moms (not necessarily a bad thing), but I do think you need to be cautious as anything you take and anything you eliminate can end up in your breastmilk. Human breastmilk is the way to go, so I wouldn't change that if at all possible. Just be careful. Your baby might give you some clues, such as fussiness and symptoms (runny nose, skin problems, etc.) if you're doing too much.

I'll update this board as things progress. I'm hopeful but realistic. Yet, for the 1st time in my life I believe I can get better. And that means something!!!

I agree with you. I am a huge breastfeeding advocate, but have to be careful. My toddler is 14 months now and only nursing at bedtime, so I tend to think whatever effect may be minimal. The dr. says the things I am doing will only be healthy for her. Either way, I'd say only about 5-10% of her nutrution is from my milk now, so as long as I'm cautious we should be o.k. Thanks for your concern!

for this site and your willingness to put up with it all for the sake of opening folks eyes to the possibilities. I agree, finding the dr. was a HUGE step. I am doing "it all", which is definitely the expensive route, and possibly risky. I want to go along with this guy for now since he has such a following including some recovered RA patients. My overall focus is just good health at this point, since we'd still like to have one more baby within the next year. Funny thing is I just think it will all be o.k. in the end!

Thanks, Carol D.
Since the breast is basically just a modified sweat gland, detoxing does increase the amount of toxins that are in the breast milk. I think any serious detoxing should wait till breast feeding is done.
Ov course, a real student of detoxing would know which processes excrete toxins mainly through other avenues (breath, urine & stool). Also, things like castor oil packs to the liver would not cause more toxins to be in the breast milk since that process just increases internal detoxification.
