Safety of foods

Posted by Libby on April 28, 2001 at 16:51:24:

Is it safe to eat mushrooms raw? I have always done this; however, I have recently read several times that there are toxins in mushrooms. Also, does the wax which is put on oranges get into the orange? My son claims it does.
Thanks for any help.

there are "toxins" in some mushrooms, so you probably have eaten them.

however, there are also "toxins" in tomatoes, potatoes, eggplant, and peppers (these are members of the night shade family, as is tobacco). i suppose there are others as well...

these are toxins in that your liver must do special work for your body to be able to handle these substances without being harmed. chemical reactions like oxidation or reduction or conjugation are the actual detoxification.

now, are you killing yourself by eating these things? No, but are they contributing to slipping farther down the bell curve of immunity ? In a sense, they are-- as Dr Stoll says of eating processed carbohydrates *gag*-- borrowing from peter to pay paul, because you are using enzymes, vitamins, and minerals that were not supplied with these foods to detoxify these toxins...

do these foods offer other benefits however ? Yes, perhaps enough to be eaten anyway, though not for me. In the macrobiotic plan, wherein we seek a return to total wellness, we aim to consume no toxins...

certainly, however, the toxins that are a much more serious problem are the man made chemicals which were not meant to be eaten, even as solanines or scopolamines.

does the wax get into your fruit ?
Do your new rug and furniture outgas volatile organic compounds ? YES, but you will find plenty of people who insist not. Does the metal in your fillings or in your silverware corrode and leak into your body ? Same answer.
