Any advice for bags under the eyes?

Posted by Kate on July 11, 2001 at 07:15:38:

I've had bags under my eyes since I was a child. They aren't puffy at all, but are dark. I get plenty of sleep, and drink plenty of water. Any advice, or do I just need to accept it?

Hi Kate - Bags under the eyes is water retention - my guess would be that you don't even come close to drinking 6 or 8 glasses of pure water every day - right? - what liquids you are consuming is staying in you body - trying to hold on to what little water it gets - rather than flushing out toxins like our bodsies were intended to do. Your setting yourself up for health problems on down the road if you don't start drinking lots of pure water - give it a month or two (things don't happen over night) and the bags should disapear unless your not getting enough sleep either. Have a great day my friend!

But I do drink at least 8 glasses of water a day, and have for years!

And I get around 9 hours sleep each night too. Could it be genetic, or is there something else I could do. My bags aren't puffy, just dark.

Good Morning Kirsten - If your drinking lots of water that's great - my next suggestion would be to clean out your kidneys (the chinese say that dark circles under the eyes are a sign of kidney problems) with a good herbal product. I only know of 2 products that work - Kidney/Bladder concentrate from Southern Botanicals - price $28.00 - phone 1-727-461-5455 or I perfer to clean both my liver and kidneys with 2 products from Prime Health (in canada) called Chinese Bitters $16.00 and Meta Plus $16.00 - phone 1-416-248-2930. I'd also suggest that you put a ADDITIVE in your drinking water to improve it's function - Willard Water will do - product no. 174-101 - price $7.20 - phone 1-800-221-1152 or I perfer Patrick Flanagans "Crytal Energy" but you must pay $25.00 for yearly membership and the product cost $20.00 - phone 1-800-228-9810 - I can promise you that this product will really make a difference in your health. The dark bags are not Genetic. Hope this helps!

I second what S.H.A.P.E. said. In TCM, dark color around the eyes frequently is a sign of Kidney imbalance. In Western medicine it frequently is a sign of allergies (as in "allergic shiners"). But getting back to the TCM standpoint, allergies too frequently have a Root of Deficient Kidneys and Deficient Spleen. It's the Kidneys AND the Spleen which have the most to do with fluid transport in the body, and they also figure into most cases of edema - or one of the things which falls under Dampness accumulation in TCM. But in your case there is darkness without edema.

Do you have any problems with fatigue and with sensitivity to cold and with warming up? Or, are there problems with fatigue, aggitation, and sensitivity to heat. Any problems with diarrhea and/or constipation or digestion? Is your tongue tissue pale or red or a normal pink? You stated that you sleep 9 hours a night. Do you feel thirsty a lot, or do you have to force yourself to drink at least 8 glasses of water a day?

Darkness under the eyes can also indicate anemia or parasites. Have either of these possibilities been checked out?

Does this indicate a kidney problem?

how are your sinuses? Quite often one gets puffiness below the eyes due to blocked or chronic sinusitis. An easy and simple way to deal with is to douche your nose with saline solution daily

Fatigue in TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine) can be due to a number of Deficiencies and/or to Dampness accumulation. The sensitivity to cold points to something called Yang Deficiency. Yang is what warms and activates the body. When a person is Yang Deficient, s/he has trouble warming up and in extreme cases may wear long sleeves and sleep under a quilt in the summer.

Alternating diarrhea and constipation points strongly to something called Liver Invading Spleen. Very often there will be nausea, vomiting, reflux, and/or belching in these cases (especially if the Stomach also is being invaded) as well as poor digestion. There may be a component of long-simmering frustration in these cases depending on why the Liver is Invading the Spleen. Sometimes the Liver is in Excess - like in cases of long-simmering frustration and anger - but sometimes the Spleen is weak (from things like poor diet, eating on the run, excessive dieting, over-eating, eating while under stress, and irregular meal times) and allows itself to be invaded. What the term Liver Invading Spleen (or Stomach) refers to is the Liver is the number one Organ in the body when it comes to the proper flow of Qi (pronounce chee, also spelled Ch'i). The Qi flow has become disturbed and is flowing inappropriately to the Spleen (and/or Stomach) and is disturbing their functions.

The thristy a lot points to Yin Deficiency. Yin cools and calms the body.

Any time there is black discoloration around the eyes (or black tones anywhere in the complexion), a TCM healer automatically suspects and rules in or rules out Kidney imbalance. Given the sensitivity to cold and the feeling thirsty a lot, a TCM healer would suspect and rule in or rule out Kidney Yang and Kidney Yin Deficiency. (It's very common when the Kidneys suffer from it, they also suffer in lesser degree from the other. Also, the Kidneys supply the Yin and Yang for the rest of the body.)

I'm not saying that these are definitely your problems. You'd need to see a TCM healer in person for a proper TCM diagnosis. And these can be very lengthy and include a tongue diagnosis, a pulse diagnosis, and a lot of questions, some of which may sound odd to you. What I am doing is giving you some basic TCM information in case you want to research it further. The book The Web That Has No Weaver is excellent. The basic books by Bob Flaws also are good.

Personally, having Kidney Yang Deficiency and Spleen Deficiency, I've found hot ginger tea to be great for helping me warm up and improving the function of my Spleen. I stir an eighth to a fourth of a teaspoon of powdered ginger (bought in the spice section of the supermarket) into a cup of hot water. This may or may not be right for you given your symptom pattern is different from mine. (In my case I was so severely Kidney Yang Deficient that it completely masked the Kidney Yin Deficiency problems, and I had an aversion to drinking liquids. But like you I also required extra sleep. (Insomnia often points to Yin Deficiency (and/or Blood Deficiency problems) whereas requiring a lot of sleep often points to Yang Deficiency problems. Yang warms and activates.) In Kidney Yang Deficiency, the person will urinate a lot, and the urine will be clear. In Kidney Yin Deficiency, the person will tend to urinate less frequently than normal, and the urine will be concentrated.

Hi,

I also have dark curcles below my eyes. I always had them. My mom and my grandmother had them too. So I assumed that this is genetic. I usually put some make-up on to mask that problem.

Most of the time I've found that when a trait (like dark circles under the eyes) is carried into future generations it is because the lifestyle was also inherited and not changed for the better. Many of my own traits that were seemingly genetic have been changed because I changed some basic lifestyle habits, and especially diet, at an early age. For instance, I'm the only one of my siblings who has any original teeth left - and two of those siblings are much younger than I am. The two older ones lost all their teeth at a much younger age than I am now (62). I resemble my mother very much in looks, but have successfully avoided all of the chronic diseases that plagued her all the time I knew her. There is usually a cause, whether it's a familiar trait or a new one.

hello Kate and Dr Stoll again and everyone

i first landed on this board perhaps 20 months ago, asking basically that same question.

the archives and information here at Dr Stoll's outstanding site will reveal that there are two issues that will be revealed under the eyes as "dark circles." Plagiocephaly, a sort of mis-alignment of the bones of the skull/cranium is one. The other is toxicity.

swelling bags/puffiness is different.

the dark circles under mye yes were my clearest real indication that i had a problem.

having looked for a crainial osteopath for months, i recently found and settled for a chiropractor trained in cranial sacral methods at the Upledger Institute. I will say more about that in another message if anyone si interested, but, my cranial bones are in pretty good rhythm, so as we had figured, my dark circles are about toxicity.

over the fw years that i have been getting well, i have beasically gained control over how dark the darkness is. dealing with leaky gut, killing candida, eating appropriately , etc, and one NEW thing, avoiding ALL chlorine has lightened the darness incredibly.

only more recently have i established the connection to chlorine. with a decent understanding of Hans Selye's work, i can say that this issue may well be an individual one, but i have a little more about chlorine that i cannt substantiate yet.

i have been treated by six different doctors of chinese medicine with seven different modalitites. i have been to dozens of medical doctors...and on and on
i have cleansed my kidneys very nicely several times with a western herbal reciepe...
