A new site for diabetes was created on may 26; the site is strictly non-commercial on my part - I do not have a financial interest of any sort in this information and nothing is sold on the site; I hope the site will be of benefit to those who are interested. News items are listed first followed by various categories of information pertaining to diabetes and its complications Thank you! Mike-S

Thanks I checked it out. I`m curious as to why a teen will suddenly get diabetes type 1 and how much difference there is between type 1 and type 2. Is it a fine line for definition?

type 1 is diagnosed most in ages 10-14. second most in ages 5-9, but even babies get it.
Type 1 happens when the beta cells of the isles of langerhans of the pancreas stop making insulin. It's an autoimmune reaction, possibly to viruses, vaccines, or environmental factors. The length of time between exposure and actual diagnosis may be long or short in different patients- no one knows. The most cases are diagnosed in the fall after scholl starts, so a stress connection is suspected and some research is going on about vitamin B-3 and a connection the the old nutritional disease, pellagra. Many type 1's also have celiac disease (gluten intolerance) and I don't know which comes first. If the celiac (usually not diagnosed at the time) comes first, this would leave the person in a poor state of nutrition, because gluten-intolerance flattens the villi of the intestines and doesn't allow proper nutrient uptake. The beginning of the school year might also be a time of poorer nutrition with hurrying to school, buying a soda and cake for breakfast or eating school provided breakfasts which are often pop-tarts or similar garbage.
Type 2 used to hit mostly people in their 40's or 50's, 90% of whom where fat. They still make insulin, but they have insulin resstance due to fat nterfering with number of insulin receptors on the cells. Type 2 started being reported in kids are young as 12 about 10 years ago. Then the age went down to 9, now 4!!! Some of this is related to weight and increasing proportion of refined carbs (and even good carbs) in the diet. Type 2 in kids is mostly affecting kids of colour, so far. Type 1 mostly affects skinny white kids. It has much higher incidence in northern europe than in southern europe, except for a high incidence in Sardinia (island off Italy). Highest incidence- Finland- 36/100,000/yr. US has 12-15/100,000/yr. Allegheny County (PA?) has 15.8/100,000/yr.
