Childhood diabetes

Hello Walt,
Just wanted to let you know that today we took Nicky to the endocrinologist and she was surprised at how well he was doing. His HgbA1c was 8.2% which means his average blood sugar over the last few months was 180, half of what it was when he was diagnosed at the end of October (the target range for a child his age is between 100 and 200). She noted there weren't many high and lows (like there usually are for a child his age) and that he is on a very low dose of insulin; this she attributed to the "honeymoon period", clarifying of course that it could last "several years".
I just said that we took the foods out of his diet that drove him high and replaced them with others that he tolerated better and gave him more balanced nutrition. I told her how corn chips would drive him really high (>450) but how he ate (by accident, with my parents) 3 very large dates and 2 figs - after a big lunch!- the other day and two hours later his blood sugar was only 178. She just shrugged her shoulders and said "sometimes the readings just don't make sense". I guess not!
One thing is for sure though: he started an antibiotic 5-day regimen three days ago (for bronchitis, suspected cause some virus) and it immediately drove his values up 100 points per reading, at every reading! I hope it doesn't stay this way! Makes me think about all the antibiotics they put in animal feed, what that does to us all when we eat meat and drink milk and eat eggs. Nicky's not coughing anymore, and we look forward to getting him off the antibiotics in 2 days(as soon as we can).

Ciao, Sherri

Rhanks for the update, Sherri.

Your son is VERY fortunate to have parents like he has. Perhaps the "honeymoon" can last 100 years???

Namaste` Walt
