Diabetes In Young People

Posted by Whitney on February 13, 2001 at 00:23:04:

Hi,

I posted a comment about the skin around my neck and someone suggested that I may have diabetes. I was wondering where I can go to get a diagnosis. What kind of test do I ask for, etc?? Meanwhile I have started exercising and began a vegetable-rich diet and hopefully I can lose weight in a safe manner ... Needless to say, I am very scared. Thanks a lot in advance!!

Hi Whitney,

All you need to do is call your local medical clinic and tell them you would like to make an appointment to have your blood sugar checked. They may tell you to come right in since it is a very simple test. They will also ask you who your doctor is and if you don't have one just tell them that and they will appoint one to you. Good Luck w/ the diet!! :o)

Hi, Whitney.

The most accurate test for diabetes seems to be beyond the intellectual capacity of most physicians although they are all tsught this in medical school:

You need 3 days preparation during which you eat at least 400 grams (1200 calories) of carbohydrates a day. This is called carbhydrate "loading" and will catch even diabetes that may yet be years off.

THEN you eat nothing from midnight the night before the test--drink all the water you want. The day of the test they will take a blood test and ask you for a urine specimen. THEN, they will give you a Glucola (or equivalent) drink and repeat the blood and urine specimens 30 minutes, 60 minutes, 2, 3, 4, & 5 hours after the drink.

During this time it is important to drink enough water to ensure that you will be able to empty your bladder for each time.

95% of adult diabetics have a normal fasting blood sugar and tests taken at random mean nothing unless the people drawing the blood know when and what you ate before the blood was drawn. Even then they will have missed an important variable (what is your renal threshold for spillage of sugar).

Let us know what you learn.

Walt

Hi, Whitney - I found your original post and was wondering if you have any other symptoms of diabetes, such as excessive thirst, frequent urination, sleeping a lot? My son got Diabetes at age 6, and he had all those symptoms. He did not have a discoloration of his skin. Of course, you are too heavy and should lose weight. But, Dr. Stoll has very wisely suggested that you ask a dermatologist to diagnose the skin discoloration. That is the best place to start, since that is your main symptom. Good luck!!
