Dear Dr. Stoll, etal:
I have a daughter that I was told has Low Blood Sugar Levels otherwise known as hypoglycemia? This has come out of the blue to us. Everything that I can find on this issue deals in conjunction with diabetes, yet my child does not have diabetes. I am trying to find out information on how to regulate her diet, what she should eat, how often, etc..,things that I thought would be 'basic' yet I cannot find any information on this without it being directly related to the treatment of diabetics.
Can anyone help point me to valid informational sources on the web, books & listing of physicians/nutritionalists in the NY State Area? Please post on board and I will check back frequently.
Sincerely yours,
Confused Mother

I can't comment much on the subject as to the source, although I have read theories as to a link between diabetes and a parasite of some kind..possibly an amoeba. However, I have read in several places that hypoglycemia is now considered by many in the medical profession to be the starting of diabetes. It is said to be a delayed reaction of the pancreas to kick in and then a natural over abundance of insulin resulting in low blood sugar. This causes a very roller coaster ride....first too high one minute and then too low...Think of it as a case of diabetes when you plan a diet. There is some reason that the pancreas is reacting abnormally to blood sugar levels. Keep researching....

I am fond of Dr. Mercola's web site: www.mercola.com. You can do a search for specific keywords. Bellow is a link to a search resulst for hypoglycemia.

Hi, Diana
There's a big difference in saying Hypoglycemia is diabetes, and Hypoglycemia is now considered by many in the medical profession to be the starting of diabetes in several of places you've read. Hypoglycemia runs in our family and NO ONE has ever been diagnosed with diabetes.
I am not diabetic and have gone through what seems to be a zillion medical tests this past year, and still NOT diabetic. BTW, I will NOT think of it as diabetes when planning my diet!

From your response, I am assuming that you are hypoglycimic without diabetes. You state that you plan your diet differently than that of a diabetic. How So? What are the differences? Is there a listing of foods, drinks, herbs, etc.., that are better for those diagnosed with hypoglycemia? Where can I find those listings? I have so found found that if I control what, how, and when she eats, I can stop it from progressing into diabetes. So How do I control this?
Thank You

Diabetes is high blood sugar (hyperglycemia) and hypoglycemia is low bloos sugar. This is probably brought on by poor diet which is high in sugar or refined food and maybe due to imabalance in intestinal flora. Change the diet do that of higher protein/fat and lower carbs. Only whole foods. Eat every 2-3 hours. You may also take 200-400mcg of chromium picolinate to assist in blood sugar regulation. 1200mg of L-glutamine taken with the chromium will help more. If there are any digestive problems along with it I would suspect an intestinal microflora imbalance. Let me know if this is the case. Hypoglycemia is almost always the result of diet and can be reversed with diet. I know because I was a former hypoglycemic without one episode in 2 years.

people who have hypoglycemia are hunter-gatherers and can control their hypo with the appropriate diet - high in protein and low in carbs and sugars.
of course, your teenager is the one who will have to control the diet and learn about all of this.
anyway, it helped me to feel better and avoid all those hypoglycemic "bonks".
look up the hunter gatherer diet in the archives.
hope htis helps.

I am on a diet to lose weight and am not on a diabetic diet. Going through my doctors orders on this. You should plan your daughters diet in the manner to which you've doing.
My doctor has never advised me that hypoglycemia will become diabetes, nor has he cautioned me either. Only diet I'm on is to lose weight. I'm interested in what Dr Stoll will say about this subject. If you're concerned about hypoglycemia becoming diabetes in your daughter, continue to diet plans so far. What has her doctor said about this subject? Did he/she caution you that it could become diabetes? If I had diet plans, I'd post them for you, however, I do not. No one in my family has become diabetic, and we all have some degree of hypoglycemia.

Hi, Confused Mother.
Hypoglycemia in a teenager almost guarantees that without lifestyle changes she will almost certainly have diabetes as a middle aged adult. Hypoglycemia is a precurser of diabetes.
TOTAL elimination of refined carbohydrates will resolve the present problem as well as prevent the future one coming. The reference as to how to do that is Beth Loiselle, RD's book described so many places on this 'site. Look under candida in the archives or the 2 articles about refined carbohydrates on the homepage.
MY bet is that you will not get her to cooperate. Teenagers think they are immortal and that they already know everything. If that is the case, you have another problem. SHE has to care enough about getting rid of her symptoms to LEARN.
Many good suggestions by others from the BB.

Thanks, R.
You will be interested in a study from the University of Sydney (Australia) that just shown a direct relationship between refined carbohydrates in animal's diets with diabetes as adults---IF animal research has any validity.
This was reported in Science News, page 111; Feb 10th, 2001.
Namaste`

I had this same condition which started in college. I would get DRASTIC blood sugar drops and was diagnosed as hypoglycemic by my doctor. He stated that it indicated I would probably end up as a diabetic later in life since it runs in my family. He said to AVOID sugar. Well, I avoided sugar and I have exercised since graduation and have had NO more episodes of this. The exercise is the key!!!!!!!!
