Juvenile Diabetes?

Posted by Neil on August 20, 2001 at 15:09:54:

Doc Stoll,

I have a friend who has Juvenile(insilin dependent) diabetes. Can whole foods diet help this condition. As I understand it, he will have to take insulin for the rest of his life. But can a whole foods diet help curb the dammage to the kidneys and other organs. If you or anyone know of any organizations that provide wholistic approaches that can supplement the conventional treatments for diabetes, i would appreciate it.

Thanks

Neil, I would recommend the book Walt always recommends, "The Healing Power of Whole Foods" by Beth Loiselle. She does mention diabetics in her book, and cautions that for them, the diet has to be started under the care of a doctor because most people either greatly reduce or eliminate their need for insulin! So supervision and a close watch will be necessary probably for at least the first few weeks. But this is all wonderful news, isn't it? Once the "bugs" are worked out, this child MAY not need insulin anymore and he will be healthier for the rest of his life. Good thinking on your part to ask! Did you know Walt has diabetes??

My son who is now 40, got Diabetes when he was six years old. When they start getting insulin, most Juvenile Diabetics gradually need less and less insulin, and it seems as if they will possibly be able to go without the shots. I don't know how long your friend has known about his diabetes, but I wouldn't want him to get overly excited when and if his need for insulin either disappears or decreases a lot at first. It was a shock to me to learn that it was a normal thing and that he would eventually require more and more as he grew because his pancreas was not producing any insulin. The book that you talk about, kmd, sounds perfect because I always wondered why that happened (that the insulin requirement practically disappeared at first and then came back full force). Perhaps with the diet the author talks about, the diabetes could STAY in remission! It's a wonderful thought! By the way, my son is very healthy, has an insulin pump which he manages very well; and he is happily married with a darling 5-year-old boy. He quickly got used to his daily insulin shots and all the other inconveniences of his disease. And it actually made him stronger in every way. Raisa

Hi, Neil.

Since it was discovered, more than 5 years ago, that at least some juvenile diabetics have their problem from a hypersensitivity reaction to cow's milk, that is the first thing to totally eliminate.

ANYTHING that promotes wellness in any individual will help everything that person has to cope with. The PWFD is just one thing that will help any individual but a type 1 diabetic most of all.

Hope this helps.

Walt
