Walt/Robert Glucose Tolerance Test

Posted by Dawn G. on March 10, 1999 at 07:47:45:

I'm going for a six hour GTT. Is there any way to minimize the effects of the sugar on my system/CR-S afterward? laxatives?

Dawn,

To make sure that the results are somewhat valid I WOULD NOT use the corn syrup based drink as the test meal. As you know corn is a MAJOR food allergen and can give erronious results.

Instead use your blender to make a drink consisting of 5 pitted dates, one banana and two oranges.

What are you doing to treat your candidiasis right now or in the past?

Why are you running the glucose tolerance test in the first place?

Bob

I am controlling the Candida by diet only right now since I get very sick on even low doses of anti-fungals, and it never gets better. I'm having the GTT because I have episodes of severe hypoglycemia 3-4 hours after eating. I have about 15 minutes to eat once I have syptoms or I get extremely weak and dizzy and feel extremely ill.

Dawn,

When you say that you have severe hypoglycemia 3-4 hours after eating are you measuring your blood sugar levels or are you just saying that you hypoglycemia-like symptoms?

If you KNOW your blood sugar is plummeting you don't really need to have a glucose tolerance test done to confirm it. What is your doc going to recommend IF the test does confirm hypoglycemia?

I'm having hypoglycemia-like symptoms. I want to confirm if that is actually what it is. Also, there is much diabetes in my family tree. I don't have a machine at home, but I was just looking at them in the drugstore. They are only $10 with a rebate. Would a test at home with the fruits and the digital machine be as good as the one at the lab? I'd much rather do it at home than spend all day in a lab, plus get to keep the machine for future use. Thanks for all your help.

Dawn,

The machine that you saw in the drug store is probably newer and better than the one that your physician will try to use. Of course you will have to get some test strips and lancets. I don't know if you need a prescription to get test strips?

You'll see that it's not rocket science to test your blood sugar. Of course you can do the test at home -- just remember not to be exerting yourself too for the duration of the test period. Read a book, watch a video or surf the net while you wait.

You will want to take a fasting blood sugar reading, then drink the test meal and take a reading at 1/2 hour, 1 hour, 1 1/2 hours, 2 hours, 3 hours, 4 hours, and 5 hours.

If you ARE hypoglycemic you will probably notice the precipitous drop in blood sugar during the first 3 hours -- which makes testing during hours 4 and 5 a moot point.

If you DO exhibit a hypoglycemic blood sugar curve what will you do? Your doctor's ADVISE should be the main thing that you are paying for. Have you asked him what he would recommend if you were hypoglycemic?

Hi, Dawn.

First, to address your actual question:

Find a dealer of Standard Process in your community and get a bottle of "A F & Betafood". Before you get your symptoms chew a few of them before swallowing them. They are sort of an antidote to the sugar immunological reaction.

I think the home machines are now just as accurate as the comercial lab OR the one the doc has in his/her office.

Listen to Bob.

By the way, most hypoglycemic conditions are at least greatly aggravated by total body bracing. Muscle glycogen (the most important buffering resource for maintaining a steady blood glucose) is exhausted by bracing.

Walt
