For those of you familiar with the PWF diet...is white basmati rice considered a whole food? I can't seem to find it in brown. I have seen what they call "golden" basmati at one place. I seem to recall a discuss about this at one time on the board but don't remember what the outcome was. Also, is anyone familiar with Jasmine rice? Is that whole as well? Its also white. Thanks

I think white is not whole foods.
DOn't know about golden or jasmine, though.

Hi! I know you are talking about the traditional Indian diet. I don't know the answer for sure, but I think all basmatis are whole foods. It's hard to imagine a tradtional Indian diet that isn't all whole foods. I know my friend's husband, who is Indian, used white basmati and he was a healthy food fanatic. Again, though, I'm not absolutely sure.

BarbaraN,
I buy it at the Ozark coop warehouse. You can get it on the internet. I am not for sure if you can get it where you live at or not, we have a group of ladies that order every month.

Sorry, white basmati is not a whole food, but you can find unpolished basmati at health food stores - it is also called 'brown basmati'. Jasmin rice is white as well. Nice names though...

I miss your store. Moved away and don't have one anymore... :-(
So, can you tell us the difference between white/brown/golden basmati?
Thanks!

Yeah, I asked my friend from Nepal if the basmati rice was "polished" and she said no, that it was natural...go figure eh? I remember them discussing this on the board but I wasn't paying attention. Some people were claiming it WAS and others were claiming it wasn't. Wish I could remember the outcome as I can't find it in the archives.

Since you have all three does that mean all three are whole? including the white basmati?

Can't find the brown basmati here in our local health food stores or the Asian stores. I did find "golden" basmati at the asian store. My friend from Nepal says that the white basmati is better than the golden though. I can't believe how many different kinds of rice they have at those places...haha geesh! Basmati, jasmine, surinam, pandan, sticky...and those are just off the top of my head!!

Whole meaning?
Everything sold at Whole Foods must meet very strict criteria.
Everything is natural and nothing is genetically modifed.
Everything is antibiotic free.

Whole meaning in its natural state...unaltered....in its natural state...like you would find in nature. In other words...is white basmati a polished form of brown basmati? And thanks for your input :-)

Thanks, BarbaraN.
I just saw on the discovery chanel that the "golden rice" is a nenetically engineered variety that has been crossed with the jonquil to make it more resistant to some kind of disease.
Perhaps that is why your friend from Nepal says the white (refined) rice is better than the golden.
Perhaps golden basmati is a natural form that I have not heard of?
Let me know what anyone learns about this.

Thanks, Employee.
It is easy to tell the difference in whole grains and refined ones. If they will sprout, they are whole and if not they are not.
However, remember that non-organic grains will still sprout.
Hope this helps.
