Hi,
If a person does the PWFD and goes off fruit for 6 months, how or where do they get the nutrition usually found in fruit, such as (not limited to) vitamin C? Several people have asked me this question. They feel that they would be lacking the nutrition found in fruit.

The nutrition it takes 70 lbs. a day for a gorilla to get out of fruit. Eat hearty, haha!

Did you now?

Hi Walt,
Well, I know at least that they used to eat oranges on the ships in olden days to prevent scurvy.
What about "An apple a day keeps the doctor away"? There must be something good about apples -- is it only the fiber?
Okay, so I don't know a lot about nutrition but this seems to be a concern for people. I've had several ask so I need to give a good answer. The most recent person (another Ph.D.) asked specifically about vitamin C and vitamin D.

I dont know too much about this either, but this has also been one of my questions being on the anti candida diet, so I will be interested to hear from HY or Walt. As far as fibre, you could get that from vegetables, salads, beans etc. My naturopath said I need to eat fruit three times a day. I wont do that, as I think it will worsen my Candida.
There is the worry about lack of vitamin c. And I have to say I really do miss biting into a nice, juicy orange. :(
I would say though that with the Vit D that you could get that from the sun. But if you are dark skinned, you need more time in the sun, than someone that is light skinned or so I have read as far as your intake neeeds of vit D.

Best source of vitamin D is from sunlight, NOT DIET.
I think you are referring to phytochemicals and minerals rather than actual vitamins, right? Like apples contain boron, bananas contain potassium, etc.

Fruits may be depleted of vitamins and minerals these days, but I believe they are still a pretty good source of antioxidants, phytochemicals, flavonoids and other good stuff that quenches oxidative stress in the body. A recent analysis I saw ranking antioxidant-rich foods per 100g placed a whole list of fruits at the TOP - above nearly all of the vegetables except for kale, spinach & broccoli.
I know I don't do well eating a lot of fruit. Truly, the only concern I can see is the concentrated sugar in the absence of nutrients to metabolize it, and the fact that the sugar is fructose -- some people don't metabolize fruit sugar very well. My 5 hour glucose tolerance tolerance test is normal but I have tested out as "fructose intolerant." My bodymind tells me the same thing! I'm thinking that this may go hand in hand with metabolic adaptation = being on the hunter-gatherer side of the continuum. Other people may tolerate it better - this may be quite an individual thing.
Possible solution for those wanting to restrict fruit sugar is to take whole-food fruit concentrates if one wants to avoid the sugar. (more $ to spend, though)

Thanks,Happygal.
Even modern oranges probably have enough vitamin C to prevent scurvy. It is the ratio of short chain carbohydrates to the micronutrients in a fruit that triggers the already damaged Kreb's Cycle and continues the problem.
If the person was in perfect health she would not be coming to this website for information.

Hi!
Everyone gave great answers and I appreciate having a better overview and understanding.
Since at least 3 people asked me the same question (and one even thought it was dangerous to go off fruit) I feel I need to be able to tell them why it is safe, and how, for example, they can get all those things you mentioned (antioxidants, phytochemicals, vitamin C, etc.) from other foods.
I have found that when I tell people about the diet, they are genuinely interested. They ask questions which are at times challenging to someone like me who doesn't have a lot of training in nutrition, because they want to understand the concepts of the diet and are sincere about doing it correctly.
So I hope we can figure out how I can answer people about this one. Or, perhaps we will suggest people eating no fruit will need to take WF supplements?
Thanks in advance for more thoughts on this topic.
Best wishes,
Happygal

Thanks, Happygal.
I think this question is too complex for a general rule.
My suggestion would be to do the PWFD for a couple of weeks and eliminate any fruit during that testing phase. THEN, try some fruit. The individual's bodymind will tell them if this was not a good idea. If no negative symptoms occur, that person could probably stand some fruit while they follow the rest of the PWFD.
Hope this helps.

Hi Happygal
I was thinking about your post, and the no fruit on the PWFD. I too am now going without ANY fruit. I am most determined to overcome this Candida problem.
You mentioned that you were worried about not getting enough antioxidants in your diet. Have you thought about drinking green tea? I know you are not allowed any caffeine on PWFD, but you can purchase green tea without caffeine in it. I notice that when I drink green tea, not only does it contain antioxidants, but I also get more energy, and a much clearer, calmer mind.`

Thanks, Miss Bliss.
I'm 5-1/2 months into the "no fruit" part of the diet so I'm going to finish up the 6 months -- no problem. I'm willing to try anything that might have a reasonable chance of helping my condition and I think eliminating even fruit sugar might help give my adrenals a rest.
However I've been telling clients and friends about the PWFD and how I've been off fruit, and some of them (at least 3) asked about if a person would be lacking the nutrition available in fruit if they did that. Since I haven't gotten any in-depth training in nutrition, I do not know how to answer them. That was why I asked the question. I would still like to know more about it.
Your suggestion of drinking green tea is an interesting one. I have been off caffeine for about 20 years, except for an occasional cup of tea in a Chinese restaurant. I would imagine that green tea doesn't have much caffeine, but I would tend to avoid even small amounts. So I would like to know more about your no-caffeine green tea. Is it a particular brand? Is it "decaffeinated" (done with chemicals?) or is it a tea plant that is grown differently? I am interested.
Best wishes,
Happygal

Hi Miss Bliss,
I was interested in hearing about the no-caffeine green tea, but I think you must have missed the post (above)!

Hi again Happygal
You caught me here eating my chicken soup. Its a bit on the bland side, but I just added some fish sauce to it. That stuff smells putrid, but a little bit goes a long way.
To the green tea. The one I use to drink is called "Sen cha Tea, Japanese Style. The other one I use to drink is called "Madura Green Tea", but I think that is a wholly owned Australian Company and that one contained 3%caffeine, both teas contain no tannin. You should be able to get caffeine free green tea at your local health food store but it sure is a great way to get an antioxidant boost especially if you dont have any fruit.
The reason I dont drink green tea anymore is there was a post on the board just recently, about antioxidants working against the effectivenss of antifungals, so I have stopped the green tea for the time being. Because you dont have candida, the green tea shouldnt be a problem for you.

Decaffeinated green tea should be readily available in your area. Celestial Seasonings and Stash both make it, and many others, I'm sure. I can get it in the grocery store tea aisle, as well as health food/natural food stores. I stay away from the flavored green teas, but CS does a couple of flavors in the decaf, I think. The decaf does have a little residual caffeine in it, but it's not enough to affect my sleep. I only drink a few cups a week. No more than one in a day, generally.

I just wanted to add that the green tea DID affect my sleep, Happygal.
Granted that i got a bit carried away one night at work, and drank five cups of it, but it did say NO caffeine.
HY told me that it was most likely the antioxidants, bioflavanoids etc, that may have kept me awake, and made me feel restless as I drank it so close to my bedtime. You would probably be fine if you drink it a few hours before bedtime.
There is a post entitled, Green Tea and Energy, Happygal, if you want to refer back to that. I think it was a few weeks ago, with my name on it and HY.
