WHOLE FOOD DIET

Posted by Leslie on August 21, 2003 at 14:17:43:

Hi There,

Can anyone give me a short list of Whole Foods. I know that they are foods that aren't refined, but I really do not know what to look for at the store.

Sorry if I sound kind of not with it, but I am new to this. Thanks for not making fun of me.

- all fresh vegetables (generally with the skins on)
- all fresh fruit (also with skins on, but not seeds necessarily!)
- fresh beef, chicken, turkey, lamb, and fish of any kind (not from the deli, not canned)
- organic/free range fresh eggs
- butter

If it comes in a box, plastic packaging, a bag or can, it's probably not whole.

Folks will also add to this list whole grain breads and crackers, but you must be careful and read the labels.

You would probably learn a lot in the archives too.

At the store, stay out of all the middle aisles. Just shop the produce section and the meat/fish counters.

Leslie, easiest thing to remember is if it has an ingredient label, it is probably not whole foods. There are some exceptions like butter with salt. Start with that premise and then you can refine your choices based on the specific nutritional plan you choose.

In addition to the other suggestions, organic whole grains (preferably from the bulk bin section of health food stores) can be a main/important part of whole foods diet. Such as brown rice, millet, buckwheat, corn, spelt, kamut, wheat...

Leslie,
Do NOT eat salted butter. It is salted to prolong its shelve life. I didn't know its taste until I came to Canada. I can not tolerate taste of it.

Grassfed beef, free range chicken meat and eggs, and raw milk are all very healthy whole foods.

What's wrong with salted butter? Salt is used in making wonderful healthful fermented foods too.

Thanks, R.

Let us hope that those interested in health are using "RealSalt" (90% NaCl) and not the ersatz stuff the WHO calls salt--that is 99.9% NaCl.
