I am having problems loosing weight. I was diagnosed with Graves in 2000 and put on .15 mg of Synthroid. I began having lumps appear on my shins of both legs in May of 2003. At the time that they appeared I had also recently gained 15 lbs. I asked the doctor what I should do and she told me to cut carbs from my diet. SO for over a month I ate no more then 15 net carbs a day and only lost 2 lbs. A biopsey was done in Aug. 2003 and the results showed that I had low TSH levels. They increased my Synthroid to .175 and said that the lumps should go away. My doctor also advised me to not eat carbs and eat no more then 1000 calories a day. I tried this and did not loose any weight and it also brought back my migranes. I walk for 1 hour a day (average of 3.4 miles) and have seen no results. Whatcan I do to take off the weight? This 1000 calorie no carb diet is making me sick and it is hard to stick to. Is there any sugestions that I can make to my doctor that will help.

Two summers back I recieved radiation treatment to remove my thyriod . It was hyperactive. The procedure was successful. My thyroid is now dead. My body temperature is all off, I freeze very easily. I also gained weight I am not comfortable with and is impossible to loose. I also just turned thirty-one. Sometimes I buy into the idea that it is my age, but that is hard to believe age can change my system so abrubtly. I am very active.I walk everywhere, practice yoga, belly dance, and lift weights.I sprained my ankle almost 2 months ago, so I have'nt been doing as much cardio as I usually do, but doesn't seem to matter. I still remain to keep on this weight I so badly want gone. Oh, I am also a vegetarian. I am taking levoxyl daily. The doctor says my levels are normal. That can't be right, I live in Arizona and while everyone else is miserable by scorching hot sun, my body craves it and seems to be soothed by it.I hope that is making sense in how I know something is not right with my thyroid even though my levels are coming out normal. I like if their is a natural rememdy I can be taking for this?

I know how you feel I even asked if there is something that can be perscribed either to help me loose the weight orcurb my appitite so that I don't feel like eating everything in sight afer 3 days of 1000 calories but she just says no just stick with it it will happen eventually...easy for her to say. I went from 165 to 200 after my radiation because my doctor did not put me on any medication for almost 4 months. He kept saying I want your TSH levels to go down more. Now at 218 and have tried everything from Slim Fast to Akins and have gotten the same results no weight loss.

Excess fat is really really hard to lose and even harder to keep it off once you've got it off... Your body is used to having a certain amount of fat on it... When you diet your body senses that your intake of certain chemicals has decreased, if your intake has decreased too much your body will go into a state of shock and begin to store chemicals that your body is lacking into fat cells... Keep in mind that the changes in weight you want will take months, years, its a gradual change... Anything fast will give you a yoyo effect... Walking is a really good idea, I would suggest you walk every day if your not already doing so... It wouldnt hurt you to go to the gym and try one of those non impact cardio machines... Those can burn alot of calories off your body really quick... Remember that the goal of cardio or the walking you already do is to speed up your metabolism... Once this is sped up you will naturally shed pounds... I'm at the gym 6 days a week when I have strength so I know a little bit about what I am talking about ;) There is a way to naturally shed the pounds off your body in about a week or two... It doesnt cost much and it's actually healthy for you... It's natural, and it does work, I've tried it about 2 - 3 years ago and lost 22 lbs in a 7 days or something... I could share this with you if you like... The problem is that your body will naturally gain that weight back, the key is to speed up your metabolism... Easier said than done, and yes I gained the weight back and I was working out 6 days a week... First you need to speed that metabolism, if your interested I'll share this secret with you at a later date... Just ask for me on the forum...

Rich, you said it!! I also go to the gym 6 days a week and work out 3-4 hours a day. I signed up 6 weeks before I was supposed to have surgery and the doctor told me to loose some weight. In 6 weeks I lost 20 pounds and had a surgery 3 weeks ago, I didn't gain an ounce back even being in bed most of the time because my weight loss was fat, not water.
It takes a lot of hard work, determination and time but it's worth it. I tried some of those diets before too and each time seemed like I got bigger. What happens on those diets is that body has a tendency to break down it's muscle for energy when it doesn't get enough calories and water is a by-product of that and it causes such great weight loss but very little of that weight is actually fat so body looses muscle mass and in the process metabolism slows down and that is a vicious circle. Aerobic exercises however burns glygogen from liver the first 12 minutes and then starts burning mostly it's fat deposits for energy so it is very important to work out for at least an hour to see the results. I found the snow shoe machine being the biggest calorie burner with about 12 calories per minute, treadmil would be next and the bike last since we don't use our whole body weight while sitting on it. I also make sure to work out with rather heavy weights since they build muscle so needed for burning the fat. It changed my whole lifestyle, I started eating differently, I can't look at the junk food, it is so easy now to maintan my weight while I am in bed after surgery as I don't have a desire to eat anything heavy. I actully lost a few more pounds since my metabolism is so revved up from exercise. When I work out aerobically I always try to keep my pulse at 150-155 for an hour to hour and a half. My resting pulse went from 75 to 52 and blood preassure from 140/100 to 105/60 as of today. I feel good even after a major surgery. Keep up the good work, that is the only way to do it!

Hi, Karen.
The only reliable, long term remedy is serious wellness which would resolve the thyroid symptoms at the same time.

I still don't understand, why those people in my past where slim and didn't know a Fittness Center (gym) word.
My grandma died at 93 and was slow like a mellasses. Great granny anyway. No one of them thought about any dietting and they didn't eat only what they didn't liked.
I can tell myself I don't like some foods and 10 people can eat them at my table without my craving. But it still doesn't help.
It is the reason why I think that SHAPE's approach is only way, combined and followed with Walt's 3-legs

Going without carbs is bound to give you a headache, and a 1,000 cal/day diet is going to put your body into starvation mode, so it hangs onto the weight it's got. I would suggest a couple of things. First, eat 5-6 small meals each day, and include some complex carbs with each meal. Do not exceed 300 cal/meal. This will keep your metabolism stoked & blood sugar regulated.
Next, walking 3.4 miles in an hour means you're probably not getting the most out of that hour. Try increasing your speed so that you cover 4 miles in an hour. Mix it up with some hills, don't maintain the same speed for the duration, but instead, do some intervals of very quick walking, followed by a recovery pace that isn't slow, but allows you to recover from the fast walking. Also, don't rely solely on walking for your exercise program. This is good for health but not for weight management. You need a variety of cardiovascular exercise each week, and aim for 5 days/week, 45-60 mins per session, at moderate intensity.
And finally, be sure to add strength training to your routine, 2-3x week, lifting as much weight as you can handle without hurting yourself. I'd recommend you work with a trainer at first for guidance & ideas. Building muscle will not only help prevent bone loss, but will help increase your metabolism, which in turn will burn more calories.
Another thought: with Graves disease, the thyroid is overactive. I'm wondering why you would gain weight, being hyperthyroid. If you were diagnosed as hypothyroid, is it possible that your thyroid meds were the wrong ones?? I strongly suggest you find a better doctor.
And finally...you haven't mentioned your age, but is it possible you're dealing with perimenopause? That could account for the weight gain. And looking at more than just the thyroid hormone could be crucial in figuring out the weight situation. If you're estrogen dominant, for example, it's very easy to put on weight. If you're supplementing with progesterone, weight gain can be a side effect, as well.

Many years ago people didn't dwive everywhere they went, they walked. They didn't use macjines for every little rask, they did everything by hand. They didn't have computers or TVs and were more active. They grew their own produce and worked in the garden a lot and I can go on and on. Now we are mostly sedentary and do everything witht he help of machibes, our muscles are not used the same way so we get fatter that is why we need gym!

I was hyper and with the radiation I am now hypo. I do arobics when I have the chance and try to do some weight training also when there is time. I can't afford a trainer or a gym membership, money is too tight. I have some tapes at home. I aggree with the whole starvation thing the only problem is that I am a veteran with no other health insurance other then the VA hospital. I was thin until the radiation. I gained 35 lbs. in 4 months because I was not put on any medication. I have had some problems with the dose but now that it is back undercontrol I have stopped gaining weight but can't seem to get rid of it

"I walk for 1 hour a day (average of 3.4 miles) and have seen no results. "
This is not surprising. Walking is a really weak form of exercise. Walking is better than nothing, but not much. You need to up the intensity, not increase the mileage.
Exercise harder, not longer.

Running and walking are not the only forms of exercise. In fact, while walking and running have many benefits they also have some serious limitations when it comes to getting into shape.
There are so many other forms of exercise that it's hard to know where to start! Swimming is just one suggestion. Strength training is another.

Be persistent with the exercise, you're on the right track. Maybe increase the intensity a little, and the frequency and/or duration. When what you're doing doesn't work, sometimes just tweaking certain elements of your program will be enough to make a difference. Really try to get in 2-3 strength training sessions per week, and lift as heavy as you can, safely. I still think looking at all your hormones instead of just the thyroid could be important for you.

Karen,
THE PWFD is not a "Diet" to lose weight, but you will. It's an eating for life eating plan.
By eliminating all "processed" foods you WILL lose weight. I started the diet in January, and I've dropped 40 lbs so far without even trying. My cravings for simple carbs disappeared after 3 days. My plantar faciitis disappeared
by 3 weeks. I can't say enough about this diet.
Good luck to you.
