I thought I'd call myself Wendy L since there seems to be several Wendys on this site. I'm the one who had the bad vit/min reaction. Been doing quite well since I went off the vit/min. In fact I decided to stay off all vits for a while and guess what? The strange itchy skin that I've had for the last year has went away. I even went off my Allegra.
I received a copy of the Whole foods book. I really like all the recipes. I don't eat much sugar except a few small pieces of dark chocolate. I find it a little hard to believe that they can be causing such horrible symptoms. Especially since it's such a small amount. I mean I really enjoy the taste. And fruit is not much of a substitute. I guess I tend to try and take things in moderation. And cutting out all sugar and all the other stuff at the same time seems a little extreme. Haven't receive my copy of Dr. Stoll's book yet. Bye for now. WendyL

It's really funny you mention the dark chocolate again. I have been good about having very little, and if I do, I just have a couple of small pieces made with Malittol, not sugar. Yesterday, I had two handfuls of dark chocolate covered coffee beans (made with sugar). And within an hour I was jittery, weak, frightened, and walking unevenly. I'm sure it was the combination of too much sugar and caffiene. But I was surprised at how quickly it happened and how overwhelming the effects were. I think the effects are more pronounced when you don't do it that often. Just thought I'd share that insight I had.

I've never heard of Malittol. Is there any difference in taste? Where do you get it? I'm very sensitive to caffiene. If I have even half a cup of coffee with caffiene I'm ready to climb the walls. I don't seem to feel any side effects from the chocolate. But like I said I usually limit it to a couple of small pieces. It's funny. Sometimes I think I should have side effects from things like that and I don't. And then sometimes I eat something that I've read is supposed to be really healthy for me and I have side effects. (like the vit/min thing) I guess that just proves what I've said before. One size does not fit all.
Sincerely, Wendyl

Beth, is that the same as those chocolate chips labeled "malt sweetened?" And is this just another form of sugar?

All I know is that maltitol does not raise blood sugar the way regular sugar does. That's why it's put in so many "diabetic" foods. I have low blood sugar and I've found that it doesn't affect my blood sugar negatively or positively. But I still don't eat much of it as it has the tendency to induce flatulance and acts as a laxative if I eat too much. Obviously, that's not good either. But it's better than being wound up and then spit out the way sugar does. And in small amounts, it feeds my dark chocolate addiction very well. It tastes just as good as the regular stuff.

I buy mine at Trader Joes. But you can find it online everywhere and sometimes in the diabetic section of the supermarket. The Belgians make awesome sugar free chocolate. In Europe they sell it everywhere. My friends always bring me back stuff when they go there.
I think it tastes just as good as regular chocolate. And if you find some Belgian stuff, it's better than most regular chocolate.

Maltitol taste as good as dark chocolate and it causes some laxative effect? I could use that. Sounds good to me. Sign me up.

That's what I said at first too. And then it started making me fart. So, I still had to keep it a small amount.

Hi, Wendy.
If you are hypersensitive to penicillin, how much do you think can cause anaphylaxis and death?
If you are hypersensitive to sugar (and the cross sensitivities described in Beth's book) all it takes is the same trace to keep the hypersensitivity going.
The only way to tell is to go 2 weeks perfect on the elimination of refined carbohydrates diet and let your bodymind laboratory tell you if that is worth while. If you cannot do without your chocolate for that long, that tells me it likely IS a problem for you.
Let us know what you learn.
