Potatoes Not Prozac

Posted by Lana on June 09, 1998 at 00:09:18:

I just ordered your book today. Can't wait to read it! I scanned this message board for any posts on the new book "Potatoes Not Prozac" but didn't see any. The book discusses "sugar sensitivity," coined by the author to describe a genetic disorder having these three: carbohydrate sensitivity, low levels of endorphin and low levels of serotonin. Have you read the book, and if so, could you comment?

Dear Lana,

I have not heard of the book. However, it is true that if people avoided ALL refined carbohydrates they would see dramatic improvements within 4-14 days.

Potatoes with the peeling on, brown rice, whole grains-- vegetables they way they grew--are all whole (that is, they have all the micronutrients they used for their own growth & life--sort of) and as that do not trigger the stress factors in the Krebs Cycle that cause some of the brain sensitivities that cause depression & anxiety.

SO, I can see, without even reading the book, that it must have some validity. HOWEVER, having said that, those who want to see those GREAT results would profit greatly by reading Beth Loiselle, RD's classic "The Healing Power of Whole Foods"---call (800) 870-5378. It is the only book that I know of that carefully spells out all the ersatz names for refined carbohydrates that the manufacturers use to hide them in the foods.

Go to the link Sugar vs Refined Carbohydrates to get an idea of the mechanisms behind why this works.

Of course, this sensitivity IS genetic in everyone just is eye color, height, weight, intelligence, immune capacity, etc., etc. It is just that every system has its own Bell Curve of penetrance so some people are much more susceptible than other--so does sugar addiction!

I will be interested in your thinking once you have read the concepts in my book.

Walt

Thanks for your response. I definitely want to learn more about this whole subject. (If you are interested in what "Potatoes Not Prozac" has to say, you can go to the author's website at www.radiantrecovery.com.

Thanks, Lana,

I like the site. Knowledge will set you free. The more you learn, the more easily you will be able to fit things together. That is when you will know which "facts" are more correct than others----they will "fit" best.

Nutrients...

After getting the book, Healing power of Whole Foods, I have determined I do not have the motivation to adhere to such a strict diet (Although I would if someone else was doing my cooking, ha ha). I have seen websites listing nutrients that can rid the body of candida and parasites..Would these nutrients be a viable means of eliminating candida while still remaining on the type of diet the world gives you (you know everyday stuff)..I do exercise and practice skilled relaxation..Also i have your book...

Dear Richman,

How have you checked your relaxation technique for brain rhythms?

If you are doing this right (and often enough) you will probably GET the discipline to do the diet in about 6 months. Even if not, you at least will have a chance of dealing with the candida if you are using some of the more effective oral stuff that kills the fungus in the intestinal tract. They all work differently for different people so you would just have to try different ones to see what works best for you.

Without the diet you will be dealing with this for at least 2 years and have a 95% relapse rate when you stop "treatment".

This is an average. Since people are not machines, SOME people (especially those practicing effective skilled relaxation) will be able to get back to norrmal functioning (and resistance to the candida) without being careful about the diet.

My biggest hope is that you will become a different person (AND have more than enough horsepower to accompllish it) by the correct practicing of skilled relaxation and will begin to see the advantages of actually doing the diet long enough for your system to get ahead of the game.

No one suggests that you have to do this diet forever. A healthy body can tolerate a pretty bad diet without breaking down to this extent. Once healthy, most people can stay there just with skilled relaxation & exercise--even those who had candida.
