I think I am loosing too much weight per week?

Posted by David Anthony [1222.10] on February 06, 2004 at 02:43:53:

G'day, well I have been eating more healthy for over 6 months now, and I have watched weight drop off. Of course I am exercising cardio on average 3-5 days a week. Running and doing Ab exercises. At christmas, I weighed 87kg. Now, as of Feb 6, 2005, I am 81.5kg. I was told this rapid weight loss is not good for me? however, this is the weird part.

I am not staving myself, however, due to my long shift working hours, today it was 14 hours long. I dont eat much. For breakfast, I had a mango, and a bottle of water. For lunch I had an apple and a stick of celery, and a cup of water, and have not eaten since, I will go home and may be make a juice or salad. I know, and I fear, that if I stop eating like this, I will put the weight back on, however, I also fear that if I continue, I may be doing damage, meaning, Burning muscle instead of fat. My BMI is normal for my height, weight and age, however, I like the feeling of not waking up with a white tounge, and a fat gut. I like the feeling fo being thin, however, I am happy now with my weight, but worry like I said if I stop, will the weight go back on (It has before when I changed my food diet, earlier), or should I mix in a few fat meals every now and again to equal it all out.

Any advice?

Dave

Your diet doesn't sound very nutritios to me and I thought
I had been the king of dieting. Have you been eating like
that for 6 mo ? I got drastic but still ate usual foods,
just half as much as I increased my activity level a lot.

You didn't give your height or what you're trying to
accomplish.

I like being lean and can't get to where I want to right
now but I still like to eat everything I like and did but
just less of it and do things to burn calories with
everything I do when I try droping lbs. If you have
questions about what you are doing, then I think you are
thinking that something isn't right.

bodies require both fat and protein to be healthy. The foods you list suggest you are a vegetarian. f so, consider adding smoothies to you life. n you blender, put water or soymilk, protein powder (soy isolate protein powder or rice protein powder, flax oil and safflower oil and you can add soft fruit for flavor if you like.
If you prefer whole foods, start adding beans and raw nuts to your diet-protein and fat are necessary for long term health.

Just want to confirm Anns post. Add lots of healthy fats back to your diet. You can have olive oil on salads....
You can eat virgin coconut oil, put it on salads, cook with it. Spectrum and NOW put out a good tasting coconut oil. It comes in a solid form, but it melts almost immediately to the touch. It doesn't taste greasy or oily.
David, I would suggest that you get Sally Fallons book, "Nourishing Traditions". It not only has recipies, but also has lots of information about the healthy eating.

Hi Dave,

I ate a lot like you when I first started eating a PWFD -- it was just easier to have an apple than to go to the effort of fixing a complete meal. I lost ~ 25lbs (11kg) in the first 5 weeks, and soon realized that I NEEDED more food. I've since started making sure I'm getting enough protein and good fat, and feel SO much better.

How are your workouts? Your stamina must be suffering if you're eating this way every day. I would hate to see you start feeling bad, and chuck the whole wellness program -- which could easily happen if you continue eating so little food (and NO protein or fat?).

Please keep us updated on your progress.

Be well,

Donna

Hi, Dave - It sounds to me as if you are on a starvation diet without realizing it. Have you ever counted the number of calories you eat each day? The calories needed to gain one pound are 3,500. To maintain your weight, depending upon your body-build and activity, you need approximately 2000 - 2500 calories a day. If you are eating less than that, you will lose weight and then after the fat is gone, you will lose muscle. So, as the other posters have said, you need to add more calories. does your gym have a nutritionalist you can consult? You don't want to become anorexic!

An apple and stick of celery is not a "Lunch"....
Eat more!

Alas, Michele, how's this: my friend Sara and I visited her very thin friend Anna without warning once and she was about to sit down to lunch. Lunch was:

one quarter of one piece of toast (remaining threequarters of the piece of toast was in the compost bin).

The quarter of a piece of toast had been divided into about eight tiny morsels. Each had an eighth of an olive and a piece of tuna the size of your smallest fingernail on it. There was a single piece of lettuce on the plate.

That was lunch. Sara and I had a cup of coffee and sat while Anna spent half an hour eating her lunch, washing it down with a big glass of water.

Of course our reaction, like yours to Dave, was "eat more!". Anna consented to eat more lunch. She ate a single sliver of apple. A sliver: about an eighth of an inch thick. She divided that into little pieces and ate each one by one.

We had never noticed in social situations that Anna didn't eat. We still don't know whether she ate socially and then threw up, or just avoided eating, because after that encounter Anna avoided both of us.

David Anthony, reassure us that you aren't going to end up in Anna's league!

Hi, David.

You could eat a lot more variety and still eat only healthy things.

If you do not mind my saying so, you are not eating enough to keep a bird alive---according to what you have listed here and especially with your work schedule.

Until you can reestablish some kind of appetite that matches your needs, I would suggest your finding a competent Nutritionist (A Registered Dietition--not, in my opinion, a competent guide--would likely suggest you eat lots of candy bars.) to guide you through this transition.

Let us know what you learn and how you do.

That's very sad...

I know that I was losing my appetite, but it was a chemistry issue; I didn't have enough Zinc... once I ate more zinc, I regained much of the appetite back.

Also, during this time (low zinc) I was "watching" what I ate and did not eat enough, I'm sure...though I was still working out a bit. I was worried about gaining weight and looking heavy "on air" (on tv, where I worked at the time) which was ridiculous, but a real job security issue - not that I myself had to worry about it.
So - I do understand both the psychological issues to an extent - and chemistry.
This guy may need Zinc! I had gone to my OBGYN who is very alternative; and he told me that most people with anorexia lack enough zinc... not that this man has anorexia, but it would not hurt to try a bit of zinc out daily, and check his status in a few weeks.

Michele, that's good advice of yours for David Anthony: I've found several references to research into links between zinc deficiency and anorexia nervosa...ie

zinc and anorexia abstract
