GOOD NEWS from the Encouraged Hypoglycemic

Hello Walt, Bob, RHJ, Trish, Denise, and BB

I am elated!!! I got my LGS test back today, and it showed I am in the normal range!!! This deserves a new thread; that other one was getting old and long, and thanks for all the input and for supporting me in my discouragement.

Here are what all three of my tests have looked like:

February '99
Lactulose recovery, 1.6%
Mannitol recovery, 33%
Lactulose/Mannitol Ratio, 0.047%

August '99
Lactulose recovery, 2.2%
Mannitol recovery, 56%
Lactulose/Mannitol Ratio, 0.040%

November '99
Lactulose Recovery, 0.7%
Mannitol Recovery, ll%
Lactulose/Mannitol Ratio, 0.064%

Please feel free to interpret this, Walt and/or Bob. This is the first time there hasn't been two dismal paragraphs of explanation on a separate page. It just said the ratio is elevated, implying a tendency toward "leaky gut".

Thank you, Bob, for all your precautionary statements about tests, and your great advice. Very interesting about the eating habits of our bloodline. I know I obsess about test results and that I should remind myself how great I feel. I was just at a low place, as sometimes happens, especially since I had laryngitis so badly and then turned around and got a cold.

Thanks again for all the Great Support!!! And have a great Thanksgiving. Pray for me, that I won't be tempted to celebrate and undo all my progress.

Toodles
Johnelle

Excellent progress, Johnelle.

NOW, if your "LGS symptoms" do not abate, we HAVE to find what we have missed.

Have a WONDERFUL and "safe" set of holidays. NEXT year you can be "bad".

Namaste`

Hi Walt, Bob, Trish, Denise, RHJ, and supporters!

I am just back from five days in the Hill Country of Central Texas at a family reunion, 45 of us at a retreat center. I began on Wednesday very gingerly testing my ability to eat like normal folks, and suffered no ill effects at all! By the end of the weekend, I was eating what everyone else was, but cutting corners on wheat and dairy and sweets, though I did have some of each.

By Saturday, when we drove back north towards home, my hands were beginning to really ache and feel arthritic -- probably from those two slices of cream cheese coffee cake and other sources of wheat that I so enjoyed. Sunday it was even more intense, but faded away as the day passed.

I am back in my "safe" haven, having eaten salmon and pinto beans for breakfast. I'm going to eat lunch out with a friend today -- first time in NINE MONTHS! We're going to the local Country Club where I'll have lots of choices on a buffet line.

I'm having a difficult time determining my plan of action, what with the holidays fast approaching. I don't want to undo all my good work reversing leaky gut, but I feel so encouraged that I'm progressing. Just wondering what your thoughts are about how safe I need to be at this point.

Hope you had a blessed Thanksgiving. I give thanks for YOU!
Johnelle

Hi, Johnelle.

Is this the same person who was so discouraged just a few weeks ago (grin)?

Persistance = Results.

Hi Johnelle,

What you did (at a similar time in my recovery) would have sent me into a 4-5 day arthritis funk -- so 'cheating' has different effects on different people. I can tell you that after a couple of years of doing the right stuff that I can do what you did and not suffer unless I did it repetitively for 3-4 days.

I don't really have any words of wisdom for what you should do during the holidays. I DID have the same struggles of trying to figure out how best I could 'cheat' for the better part of a year. After a lot of cycles of punishing myself with 'treats' I had to ask myself why I was doing this violence to myself? There were PLENTY of good things that I really enjoyed eating that made me feel better to eat rather than worse.

I just had to decide what I wanted to do.

Bob

Yes, this is the somewhat schizoid BB participant who was so depressed at making no progress from all my efforts. I don't know if this was a divine act of God, knowing that I could take no more discouragement and needed desperately to have a "SIGN", but I have been feeling remarkably well, and I keep remembering Trish's story of having her fling after five and a half months and then ending up back at where she started, miserable.

This has truly got to be the greatest test of my will power, to know no ill effects from eating worldly food, but to choose to avoid it. Oh dear, and the holidays upon me! After lunching with a friend today I will admit I did feel a dull ache around the waistline. I'm sure it was the bread pudding I ate. Maybe I will learn from that.

Thanks once again for all you both have done and continue to do to promote good health among the masses.

Johnelle,

Just remember, there are many variables operating here:

1. The longer one is perfect, the more thay can mess up before setting themselves back. This is true of diet, exercise and SR.
2. A good rule of thumb is that ANY mess up in the first 6 months is likely to quickly set one back to ground zero. AFTER 6 months, the rule gets pretty fuzzy depending on how long the person has had their problems and how bad they were. After a few years, people rarely need to be perfect so long as they are reasonable.
3. The holidays THIS YEAR will be a "test" for you but NEXT year should be a breeze.
4. After 6 months, I have yet to see a person who had to go back to ground zero from any indescretion unless they persist in testing fate. Usually, after this long, it takes only a week of perfection to get back where they were before stopping being perfect.

Hope this helps.

Walt

Hi again Johnelle,

I'm glad to hear that you've survived so far so well! I wanted to point out that my "fling" was not a mere week long binge, though it started that way, but a slow downward spiral stemming from my weakness with sugar! So, if you can keep from sliding down the slope, I think you'll be fine.

I still have the same "problem" you're dealing with right now - one or two or even five indiscretions don't make me feel bad, so it's really hard to "just say no"! I will start to feel bad after a few weeks of messing up, but by then, the effects are obvious and have accumulated - bloating, exhaustion and usually a flare up of arthritis, rosacea and/or sinus infections.

All I can say is "hang in there" and try to stick as close as you can to your perfect diet during the holidays with the understanding that when they're over, you will have to go back to your better habits :-).

Keep us posted and most importantly, enjoy your holidays!!

Thanks for the kind words!

Thank you so much, both Trish and Walt, for your caring words and cautionary warnings. Today I had a little taste of just what you speak of ... I had bought some run cordials, those decadent chocolate liquer bon bons. I ate one, and wow, was it ever good, after all these months! So I popped another, and I lost track after four or five. I felt a little aching in the stomach, and it hung around for a few hours, so it was a gracious reminder that I am not to do that again. I boxed those babies up and gave them to my hairdresser; she's not as sick as I am yet!

What I can't believe is that I have no problems with hypoglycemia or my extreme H-G metabolism anymore ... or rather, right now. It hasn't been three weeks since I ate a half a kiwi one night and then had a stomach ache within fifteen minutes. About a week later I ate ONE BITE of a banana and had the same problem.

I've noticed a little aching in my feet, which, interestingly, is where my fibromyalgia first surfaced. I am definitely inspired to behave myself after these sneak previews of what my holidays could look like. Since I m doing the guaifenesin treatment for FMS, I'm confused as to whether it's FMS reversal or bad eating that's making me uncomfortable, but regardless, I need to eat right. I've got too much invested in this to do something stupid now. After all, I'm not a stupid person usually. ;o)
