Hi, DR Stoll
I've been on a Personal Improvement program for the past couple of years. Lost a lot of weight, joined Gym in order to exercise. Within last year, I've ungone surgery, diagnosed with BE, Diverticulum and arthritis.
Got tired of being on a diet to lose weight over the holidays and not losing anymore weight. Got "TICKED OFF" and decided to LIVE it up and too bad if I gained weight. Ate just about anything I WANTED, including chocolate cheesecake! Finally went to my weight loss Doctor and thought, OH BOY your in TROUBLE NOW GIRL. I even told him I had been very bad and not to yell at amount of weight I'd gained. (never yells at me, just gives me a LOOK & doesn't say anything)That makes me want to crawl underneath the DESK.:-)
Never expected to have lost any weight and I lost 1 lb!
Why? How? Never heard of BE, Esophagus Diverticulum or Arthritis causing weight loss. I'm very baffled! No I did not walk, exercise or SR. In fact was more like a couch potato when not at work.
Do I have a totally mixed up system or what? Baffles me very much.

Hi, Betty Boop.
I have observed this phenomenon many times in my practice and even in myself.
We now know that a radical change in diet, like you are describing, frequently takes a few days or weeks before the weight starts to go up and THEN, it does so with a vengence. Unless you get back on what worked, you will pay dearly-- believe me.

Hi, DR Stoll
Unfortunately, you seem to have a Habit of telling me something I really didn't want to HEAR. I was hoping my chemistry had changed. (boo hoo)
Can't understand why it would take more than 6 weeks to get even. Anyway I've got to pay the piper, but I'm going to reschedule this Saturdays appointment for SURE.:-)
Seriously, is there a way of dropping at least 2 pounds in a week? I have gone back onto my prior diet 2 weeks into this year. Having trouble trying to do SR. Can not be quiet long enough, along with so many distractions in the house.
HELP

Hi, Betty Boop.
You may find a nutritionist in your town who would be willing to supervise a vegetable juice fast for a week or so. Once you get good at it, you might even try a water fast. Until you become accomplished at this you will need supervision. ANY fast that lasts more than a week needs to be supplemented with predigested, essential amino acids to avoid muscle wasting. You want to lose fat, not muscle.
After a 3-4 day period this becomes MUCH easier to stay on and after a few weeks, your system WILL be reset at least for a few months.
Maintain a daily walking program throughout.
You might start by getting a book on fasting at your healthfood store.

Hi DR Stoll
Thank you for your suggestions. When I read Monkey Mind in posting to me, I immediately went into my monkey imitation.:-) Then I went to search for what it Meant. Seen it mentioned numerous times, never bothered to find out what it meant. (Now I know)
Vegetable Juice Fast sounds ok to me, but Water Fast. I've got to think about that one. After two days on clear liquid diet for tests, I had a headache that felt like my head was going to blast into outer space. Definitely won't do it alone. Can't trust myself. (I like to cheat)
Now about this DAILY WALKING program. Would doing exercises in pool be about the same?
After considerable mind searching, decided if I re-schedule Doctors appointment for Saturday it might lead me back to running from my problems again. (I've stopped that as it's taken it's toll on my well being and self worth or lack thereof.)
Thanks again

In Reply to: Vegetable Juice Fast sounds fine--BUT why Walk throughout? posted by Betty Boop on January 19, 2000 at 21:09:50:
Hi, Betty Boop.
I would NOT recommend a water fast until you were comfortable with a vegetable juice (you notice I am NOT saying fruit juice) fast. You really should get a little book about this first and then you would not have to ask these questions. These are good questions and you will have many more if you do not get your own little guide.
Under water exercises are even better than weight bearing ones. They are to keep up muscle tone since prolonged fasts tend to lose muscle mass if one does not work against that.
The first 3 days of fasts tend to be miserable because of withdrawal from addictive foods and behaviors as well as the detoxification that will go on. It sounds like you had the worst without the benefits.
This is another reason I urge people to learn first. However, after thae third day, these symptoms go away and hunger tends to disappear--you will like that. From then on, fasting is mainly boring but does not cause all these symptoms. As a matter of fact people start feeling so good that sometimes they have to be encouraged to stop the fast when the agreed upon time is reached.
Become as much of an expert as you can before trying it. However, you cannot REALLY become an expert until you have also done it a few times.
Hope this helps.

Hi, Dr Stoll
Thanks for your advise. I'll do more reading and get a book on either fast or Vegetable Juice Fast. Since I'm normally reluctant to doing anything, ask apparently too many questions beforehand.
Be assured, THIS I WILL DO as it's my health I'm trying to take charge and control.
