I am an 18 yr old male and I am VERY thin. I have always led an active life, lots of sport; especially surfing. My diet is not really very good, I do eat a lot of junk food but no matter what I eat ( eg; carbohydrates etc )I can't put on weight ! Can you help ? Is it just that I have a fast metabolic rate ? Are there certain foods that slow this rate down ?

Hi, NJ.
Where did you get the idea that your body mass was just made up of calories? Your body is like any other structure only MUCH more complex. It is made up of at least 100 different trace, micro and macronutrients OTHER than the calories; (carbohydrates, proteins, and fats) that are all that is left in the refined foods you are eating.
How do you expect to build healthy tissue with 3 things when normal tissue has at least 100?
Look at the archives about diet, and listen to Robert McFerran for a while.
Just think of how well you would do with a couple of planks, a hammer and handfull of nails if you were trying to build a house with a functional plumbing system, electrical system, carpeting, heating etc., etc.
Genetically, there are some people who can do this better than others. You have already proven to yourself that you are not one of those. SO, you have little choice but to put more information into your hopper than most people have to think about.
