How to tell if you eat right ??

I usually go by wether I have any digestive problems and
how I feel as to wether I eat the right foods for me. I have
friends who tell me they are increasing fiber or changing
their diet to something they have heard is Better for health
and when I have tried these things something happens I don't
like. I have a friend who claims he eats a lot of veggies
an passes gas and eliminates ALL day long and the food looks
as it did when it went in and he thinks he is eating well
because of all the fiber he consumes. he eats a lot of hot
peppers and says they burn his butt. I eat anything hot that
I run into and Never had this problem. He claims I haven't
eaten really Hot stuff which I disagree with. Only times I
had burning I figured the food passed through too fast for
some reason and stomach acid got through since it has
happened when not eating hot or spicy foods.

I have a problem with my hounds who have had the runs for
a few days so have been giving them rice and boiled chicken.
I usually don't eat rice but have been since I have been
cooking up enough for a few days and I have been gassy. I
rarely eat rice or have a craving for it and am only eating
it because it is There and don't think it is agreeing with
me or I am digesting it well.

I had many sensitivities after a chemical injury and a
Very bland diet was all that I could tolerate for a while
and rice was something I ate to survive with Very little
chicken or ham and Oatmeal turned out to cure severe stabing
headaches I was geting that would last for days that I
believe were food related.

I usually hear something that keeps me from changing my
to something They Say is better, like a high fiber one to
prevent colon cancer because I also hear that too much
fiber binds minerals and stops absorption and years ago I
got concerned I wasn't eating enough fiber and started to
have rectal bleeding and I Really got worried and made a Dr
appointment to be checked but he was one that you didn't get
in to see till hours later than the scheduled time so after
3 hrs I left and Thought about what could be causing the
bleeding and thought the fiber may be it and went back to
my usual foods and it stoped. A friend I told this to
I was crazy not to be tested since bleeding is a Bad sign
but that was 20 yrs ago and figure I might sensitive to too
much fiber and I don't crave many high fiber foods.

Hi, Vince!

Just by observation you have learned more about diet and nutrition than the Dietitians and the MDs probably will EVER know.

There are MANY steps between what one eats (diet) and the final destination (inside the cell-NUTRITION). I have listed them before and they are archived.

The best way to learn about it for yourself (the individual) is to try the e-diet Robert McFerran has done so much with on this BB (archived). Also, you could try one of the many other healthy diets to find out if you feel a LOT better with any of them. There are so many diets because there are SO many different metabolisms out there. We have no reliable tests to determine which one will work for any individual without using the personal laboratory we all carry along with us (our bodymind).

Hope this answers your question.

But what about the withdrawal symptoms fooling you? (WALT)

Now I'm confused! If we only go by how we feel in deciding what foods are best for us to eat, then are we not taking into account the horrible withdrawal that we can expect to experience when we change our diet away from some trigger foods that are bad for us?

For example, if a person suddenly switches to whole foods, cuts out all sugar and caffeine and processed or refined foods, they WILL go through a period of misery, almost guaranteed, right?

I have heard of children with autism who eat only a very narrow variety of foods, day in and day out. It is my understanding that these are probably the very foods they should NOT have (such as casein and gluten).

So when making dietary changes and/or eliminations, would it be of KEY importance to ignore all bad symptoms that occur within the first week or so? (and THEN see how we feel?)

Hi, KMD.

You are right. This is why the only real solution is knowledge and study. One must become an expert in the mechanisms in order to understand this. This is something one cannot delegate to any professional.
