am i just being naive about diet types????

Posted by holly [6404.1575] on April 24, 2007 at 12:13:47:

I've tried a lot of different diets (blood type, metabolic, candida, no carbs, low fat, vegetarian, etc). None for the sake of losing weight, just to see if I felt any better or worse on them. Am I just being naive by thinking that a whole foods diet, consisting of all foods, is the best way to eat? For myself, I don't eat dairy or wheat because I have a hard time digesting them. But I have been on a combination of the blood type diet and H/G diet for a few months. I feel like I should be eating more of a variety of foods, like beans and legumes (not for my blood type) and tomatoes and tofu sometimes. Isn't it better to get nutrients from as many sources as possible? And, I just can't make sense of the science behind most of these radical diet plans. What do you all think?

you need a copy of the book, Eat Right for Your Type (cheap on half.com) by Peter D'Adamo.

He doesn't tell you to avoid beans and legumes, but classifies them into 3 categories- only some types of beans are to avoid, others are neutral or beneficial.

In general, a varied diet is good, but because of immune problems (which may be a result of vaccines or other moern medicines) many people need to limit grains, especially those containing gluten (wheat, oats, barley, and rye). Use D'Adamo's lists to pick safe (neutral or beneficial) foods in all food gategories, and then fine tune it to your own personal avvoids that you discover through trial and error, blood testing, or elimination diet.

I have the book and that is what I have been basing my diet on for the past few months, in combination with the metabolic type diet. There are a lot of foods in my avoid lists that I think are very beneficial (nutritionally) and I'm not sure I agree with the nature of his diet (the science behind it). For example, there are a lot of beans and legumes that I am supposed to avoid, but these are such a great source of vegetable protein, that it doesn't make sense to take them out of my diet.

Most of them, and I have tried two - seem just gimmicky and placebo
effect.

I think it is best to just eat a variety and if anything, the "hobby" or
stress of eating within a ridiculous set of rules is anything but healthy.

Thanks, Holly.

It is true that the more varied the diet the better. This is the second most important adage of dietary science. The first is not eating anything that has had its micronutrients removed (refined).

Humans are too varied to know what diet will be the best for any individual. That can only be determined by trial and error. In my opinion, any diet followed carefully will begin to show it's benefits within a month or so--some, like the PWFD, within a few days to a few weeks. Keep trying and you will find yours.

Let us know when you do.

Walt

You are so right... I have more stress about what I'm eating and wondering if I'm eating the right things.
