Can you tell me if appendicitis can be hereditary? Is there any way to prevent it or does it just happen?

Hi, Carol.
ALL appendicitis is caused by dietary factors. See Dr Burkitt's book (written while he was a missionary physician in Africa) about refined foods and chronic disease. Dr Burkitt is world famous for discovering the first true cancer that is caused by a virus (Burkitt's Lymphoma).
He noticed that when a patient came to his hospital, with abdominal pain (so that appendicitis might be suspected), the first question asked the patient was: "Do you eat the white man's diet?" If they said no, no further tests were done for appendicitis since there has never been a case of appendicitis in people who eat a primitive diet. If they said yes, they were tested for appendicitis and frequently had it.
Hope this helps.
Walt
