Elimination Diet: How bad does it get?!?!?!

Posted by Cara on April 30, 2001 at 00:38:15:

So I'm finally ready to start the elimination diet and begin testing foods, but I'm a little scared. The article says that withdrawal from processed stuff and sugars can be debilitating. Can anybody out there speak to how bad it's been for them? Will I even be able to function for the first 4 days?

PLEASE ADVISE!

Cara

I had to go on a Very bland diet when I became food & chem
sensitive and I lived on just rice with a little ham or
chicken in it and think some oil or butter since everything
else bothered me. It reduced most of my problems and oatmeal
seemed to solve them or most of them related to food.

First of all it is very restrictive, second of all, it doesn't work anyway. I did it as presecribed and so many things went out of kilter that I just gave up. I find the basic premise some what questionable since there seems to be little science behind it.

I can say that it's very important to take supplements,
and some say drink lots of water because of detox-your
system is used to certain foods, even if they may not be
the best for you. For me the tough ride was
carbohydrate/sugar cravings, and the first 3 days are
the toughest but not dangerous, just uncomfortable. I
felt like something was missing...I never realized how
addicted to refined carbs I was until I tried to stay away.
On the other side of that is how much better I felt
eliminating ref. carbs/sugars.

There is a lot of information in this boards archives
about dieting, elimination diets and so forth, so if you
don't get as many responses as you would like, search
thru (it takes a while be patient).

I have tried the fasts. The last one was twelve days. The first day was tough but after that it was O.K. By the third day I, we, my husband and I, felt so good we could have flown without the Stinson. That lasted for about four more days and then we started getting weaker.

So we decided to startthe elimination diet. We've given up most of the meat and potatoes. The artheritis is better (we can make a closed fist now) But we haven't gotten the really good feeling that we did on the fast. Any sugestions?

Sandy,

have you tried cod liver oil or MSM for the arthritis ??

If the fast made you feel better why not try going off food
every so often ??

Hi Cara,
Everyone has a different response when they go on cleansing diets. It can range from nausea, fatigue, and body aches. It really depends on how much toxins you have stored up in your body. Drink at least 8 cups of water a day and take a good fiber supplement to help eliminate all the toxins. Usually, for most people the first day through the 3rd day may be the hardest. Most of the time after the 3rd day you may feel great. It really does depend on the person. So it could be totally different for you. Its important to get more rest, take a nap if you can, if your not working, or have children, try to do that for yourself.
If your have any questions after you have started, post again on the board. Many have tried the diet and will be glad to help you out!!!
Good luck :O)

hi

when i began the version of the elimation diet that i followed, i had really nothing but wonderful things to feel and say.

i was teribly motivated and eager...and on top of that, when i withdrew from the things i did, ALL of my symptoms except for the very worst two, went away in less than foud days! i knewit would benefit me, but i was thrilled that it worked so well.

(that was two and a half years ago...i didnt know about this place or these diets. i went onthe macro-biotic diet, which is more restrictive in some ways, but i know that that eally means more beneficial.)

I didn't find it debilitating at all. The worst part for me was the canker sore I got from drinking the magnesium citrate. I did the E-diet from Robert McFerren's posts.
