Walt: withdrawal symptoms and "break overs"

Posted by dfs on July 16, 2001 at 11:14:49:

I've been swimming in the archives again since you posted about withdrawal symptoms and the 6 months after the "break over" I did to my immune system with the refined carbs cheating. All I could find was descriptions of generally feeling lousy, but nothing that seemed to match what I experienced (fever, bloating, aches, soreness). And there was much discussion about Robert McFarren's elimination diet for people with arthritis and other diseases that I don't have. (Did Robert ever publish his book on metabolism and diet?) Is there a list somewhere that describes what one might experience during a "break over" (I don't recall seeing that term anywhere either)?

I'm still wondering about what to do if I get a genuine bug of some kind. I understand about the Ester C, but I haven't been able to find any zinc lozenges that don't have flavorings/sugar. Doc Kim suggested colloidal silver, but that sounds like a no-no on this site. It's disheartening that I should have to sacrifice the possibility of going liberal on the whole foods because of a bout with a bug every few months.

My nose has been "peeling" since I posted. It just sort of comes off in strips, is fine for a day or so and then starts the "drying" process all over again. What is the link with this and getting well?

Thanks for being there.

Hi dfs,

I am new to this site and have similar questions. I am currently at the third day of the elimination diet. I don't feel really awful, but I am hungry and very tired. The diet is pretty boring. One thing I noticed is about 1/2 hour after eating the sweet potato or carrots, my heart starts pounding, so hard I can feel it against the back of the chair. I assume it means my blood sugar is either too high or too low. I tried to look up the significance, but the archives don't mention it.

I emailed Robert McFerran about his book over the weekend, but so far I haven't gotten a response. I tried looking for the book in Amazon, but couldn't find it under the title or the author.
I will post if I hear from him. Please post if you find anything out.

Good luck,
Bernadette

Hi, dfs.

So far as I know, Robert's book has not yet been published.

The withdrawal symptoms from the elimination/provocation diet are not the same as the withwrawal from refined carbohydrates since NO food is as essential to brain function as sugar. The withdrawal caused by testing with a refined carbohyderte is much worse and normally parallels the exact symptoms the person had that led them to try the diet.

For the first 6 months, the bodymind is MUCH more reactive to the substance than it was when it was numb with every day exposure. I am sure that this explanation is buried in the voluminous archives about this since I have described it many times and why.

When, finally, one can have a taste of a refined carbohydrate without a reaction their immune system is ready to try a little more. For the first year it is worth while to be pretty careful and THEN the individual has to realize that they are more susceptible to this happening if they go back to their old habits. Their system broke once and will be more likely to break again if they are not careful. At least most people do not have to be PERFECT anymore to eliminate this as a part of their problems.

Careful testing, after the first 6-12 months, does not send the person back to square one.

This does not mean that I am sure that this is what happened to you. ANYONE can come down with a virus--ESPECIALLY if they are having a withdrawal. The peeling nose is a symptom of a running nose and the most common cause of that, after a week or so, is always allergy.

I do not have any better suggestions for how you are now other than that there are zinc lozenges that are artificially sweetened. Remember that they only help with the virus and not with the allergy. The vitamin C helps with the virus AND, taken to tolerance, also with the allergy.

Hope this helps.

Walt
