Lightheaded

Posted by Larissa on August 12, 2001 at 19:21:36:

Hi Dr. Stoll,

I'm 20 and sometimes feel a bit lightheaded. This happened and my doctor said it was because I had hypotension. It does happen a bit though. What can I do to prevent being lightheaded? Is there a possibility that it is being caused by something else? I also tend to have low iron.

Are you vegan or vegitarian? I was vegan for a year and it made me a space cadet, and my friends also said they felt the same way, lightheaded all the time. Burgers brought me back down to earth! Also, other options are hypogycemia, see if it happens when you eat sugar or refined carbs. Hypotension is possible too, I have a friend whose blood pressure drops when she stands up and she get very light headed every time. I'm not a Dr., just some suggestions.

Hi, Larissa - My daughter has always had hypotension, as has her dad. Both get lightheaded at times, especially, as Beth says, when they stand up suddenly. Having low blood pressure is, as you probably already know, a healthy sign unless, of course, there is a physical reason for it. There is much less chance that you will heart or circulatory problems as you age.
Do you eat foods with iron in them (liver)? My mother had low iron and used to take ironized yeast tablets. I used to take them, too, but can't find them anymore. A multiple vitamin with iron is good. This is just my opinion, not professional but from experience. Raisa

There is a condition that has something to do with your sodium levels I think. I'm sure Dr. Stoll will know it if he thinks it might be the cause.

Hi, Larissa.

At your age and sex, this has to be postural hypotension. Until you stabilize this, your best bet is to get up in stages--allowing a few minutes between lying, sitting and standing.

Serious wellness is your only certain solution to this since for this to happen, you have to have at least a genetic susceptibility to the problem of dysautonomia.

Let us know how you do.

Walt
