Balancing pH & Establishing Beneficial Bacterial Growth Question

I just want to start by saying thanks to Dr. Stoll & everyone else for sharing what you've learned - it really helps those of us in search of better health. I just got my stool analysis back from Great Smokies Lab and I am looking for more guidance than my doctor is able to give. As I suspected, I have a high about of Candida with no growth of lactobacillus (even though I've been taking acidophilus for nearly a year.) My doctor suggested switching to Metagenics brand (any suggestions?) My pH levels & Beta-Glucuronidase levels are both high. My doctor said if I get the yeast under control these levels will lower, however, on my copy of the lab test it says that the proper pH level enhances the colonization of beneficial flora. So I feel like I'm in a catch 22 situation here and am wondering if any of you have any suggestions of anything else I can do to lower my pH & Beta-Glucuronidase levels in order to get the beneficial flora established. Oh, and I have recently cut all forms of sugar (including fruit) from my diet & I'm working on SR. Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

I can't believe the synchronicity here. Can you please read the Cytolytic Vaginosis thread below?

I think we are talking about similar conditions. I too have been treating for yeast, and all the while (I suspect) throwing off my ph the WRONG way...

thanks!

or, then again

In my haste to find something helpful I rather dyslexically misread your post. ;)

Good luck in your healing!

I know, it seems a little overwhelming but what your doctor said makes sense. Read on.

When you have an alkaline colon, bifidus and lactobacillius cannot live. This is why taking your acidophilus has produced no results. It's like planting seeds in toxic soil. They will never grow.

The first thing that you must do is take antifungals to get the yeast down to manageable levels. Taking Primal Defense (starting after about 2-3 months on anti-fungals) will start to change the pH of your colon and will help to kill remaining yeast. At this point, complete another CDSA. Expect to see little or no yeast and still no benefical bacteria either. THIS is the time to start taking probiotics. They don't have to compete for space and the intestinal environment is condusive to beneficial bacteria. Then, you will start to see benefit. The 2 best PROBIOTICS that I Know of are Flora Source, and Ultra Flora (metagenics). Whenever I use them, these flora show up on the CDSA within a month at optimal levels. Primal Defense is a soil-bacteria that helps change the pH. Probiotics don't change the pH but they help maintain it once established. One more supplement worth taking once the candida is gone is Saccarohmyces Boulardi (by Allergy Research Group). This benefical yeast attacks candida, increases Segretory IgA, and heals LGS.

As far as diet goes, focus on non-starchy vegetables as your core. Add small amounts of nuts (roasted), organic meats, sprouted grains and breads (with no wheat or yeast), granny smith apple and berries as your only fruits. Keep fruits out for 1 month. No fermented foods, vinegar, soy, milk. Use olive oil, flax oil, fish oil too.

I hope this increases your understanding of what is going on. Take your antifungals, add extra fiber (psyllium, oat bran, apple pectin, cellulose, flax fiber are good choices), take Primal Defense after 1-2 months on antifungals. Follow-up with repeat CDSA. Then start probiotics when candida is at 1+ or lower. Use ONLY the probiotics mentioned as they are proven to colonize. Take care

Sunshine,

Sometimes people take MSM to fight candida. The MSM normalizes ph, keeping fungi under control. The recommended dosage is 2000 mg/day in divided doses.

I thought of a couple of questions. The first is can I continue taking anti-fungals (I'm rotating GSE, olive leaf extract, pau d'arco, & garlic) while taking Primal Defense or will the anti-fungals prevent the Primal Defense from working? The second is how long should I take the Primal Defense before starting other probiotics and can I continue to take the Primal Defense when I start the other probiotics? I really appreciate your input. Thanks.

This is a difficult thing to answer. It would probably be best and most economical to do one at a time. However, it could probably be done if you separate the anti-fungals from Primal Defense by several hours. If you decide to do one at a time, this is the order I would do them in:

1) Antifungals for 1-3 months
2) Primal Defense for 90 days
3) Probiotics thereafter and maintain primal defense

Take Care :)

Hi, sunshine.

Do you have Beth Loiselle's book?

Look up Natren Products for a better probiotic combination and add FOS: (805) 371-4737.

Let us know wheh you are successful with your SR.

Helping, does your protocol assume that all sugar and simple carbs have been eliminated during this process?
