Have you tried using ear candles? People say good things about them. http://www.mineralconnection.com/earcandle.htm seems a good source of info about their use. I think all healthfood stores carry them.

Recently I read that gargling with salt water is good for opening the tubes up. I believe a tsp of salt to a glass of warm water.

I used to fly often for business. I would have to go on trips even if I had colds. My doctor taught me a way to unblock my ears, but I only used it when I was desperate and had to fly. I would use the strong nasal decongestant spray (12 hour Afrin) and put a few blasts up one nostral, tip my head back and towards the plugged ear, plug my nose, and make a "K" sound. When the Afrin was starting to go down my throat the "K" sound would force some of it towards the eusthacian tube. I would then repeat on the other side. Dr. Stoll can let us know if this is dangerous or not. The only side effect I had was that after about 8 hours it would plug up again (and sometimes leave a ringing in my ear). I only did this 2-3 hours before the plane would land. It worked almost every time for me.

Thanks, Steve.
Your method is perfect. My method has used position instead of the coordinated method you use but both will work.
Namaste`
