Dr. Stoll and Board, I have posted messages before in relation to my daughters chronic ear infection issues. About two months ago I switched from milk based to soy formula. She is 10 months old and I had stopped breast feeding at 6 months for various issues. Recently, I contacted a Homeopathic Doctor and questioned him on a possible remedy for the chronic conditions my daughter was having. His first suggestion was to go back to breast feeding. Obviously her system is not able to handle the soy or milk based and he feels the breast milk will get her back on track. Of course, I have many issues with going back and many questions. I feel guilty that I even question going back if it is the best thing for her; however, my first question is there possibly another option that would work? If not, then how long does it typically take to begin producing milk again and what do I do in the meantime? Once I get the remedies he asked that I call him back and let him know what direction I would like to take. Please help.

Hello,
Im not sure about other options other than breastfeeding, but if you breastfed your baby for six months, there should be no problem with relactation. There is such a thing (and I apologize, I can't think of the name right now) as a system in which you have a little bottle with a very thin plastic tube that you can attatch to your breast. You put formula in the bottle while you have baby nurse at the breast. That way, your baby is getting fed while your breasts are getting the signal to start producing milk again. If you contact LaLeche league, I'm sure they can get this product for you. {:o)
I do hope you decide to try to breastfeed again. I'm not sure what you're "issues" are, but whatever the case, be confident that you yourself can provide the best nutrition for your baby!!

ds, six months of breastfeeding your baby has given him a good start. Lots of women breastfeed for longer, but I was unable to continue with all three of my children for different reasons. Two out of three had problems (not horrible ones) with ear infections, the middle one having been breast fed the longest and he's the one who had the fewest problems with them. The immunities that your baby gets from your milk make the difference, that's a given if you use the right nutritional supplements to be healthy, yourself. But if you cannot breast feed for whatever reasons, there are nutritional supplements that you can give your baby to strengthen his immune system. Feel free to e-mail; I'm the mother of three and the provider of care for many more over the years.

Hi, DS.
Have you TOTALLY eliminated any trace of the dairy??? Until you do you will have no idea how much this might be contributing.
Contact LaLeche Foundation for information about restarting nursing. In my opinion, this will not do much. You also would have to meticulously eliminate dairy if you were successful.
About 15% of these are due to wheat (or the combination of dairy and wheat) and you would have to totally eliminate that for a few months if the total elimination of dairy does not do the trick.
Let us know what you learn and how she does.

Thanks for your comments Cheezi, My hope is the homeopathic rmemedy and the diet change will do the trick along with going into the spring season. I have three children as well all 4 and under so the winter season really hit hard this year with sickness. Diet changes, supplements, good rest, exercise and trying desperatly to keep things clean is about all I can do it seems. If my little one really needs the breast milk I will certainly consider going back to breast feeding. I am such a different person now and I wish I could go back and nurse all of my kids longer than I did.

Dr. Stoll how do you feel about the thought of children that were on soy formula as a child developing an allergy to soy as an adult? Should I alternate the soy and possibly goat milk to help?

Hi, DS.
Certainly the younger anyone is exposed to any new protein the more likely they will develop a hypersensitivity to it. That has been a mainstay of pediatric recommendations for at least 50 years.
IF the child does not have LGS or C-RS, TOTAL elimination for about 6 months will cure that kind of hypersensitivity.
Let us know what you learn.
