blocked eustachian tubes

Posted by Jim on July 06, 2003 at 14:29:55:

How does one know if he/she has a blocked eustachian tube? I have tinnitus in both ears and they have been ringing away for 4 months. I have been reading that if the eustachian tube is blocked it could possibly be the cause. Thanks for your help.

In Feb. my right ear became filled with fluid. This caused ringing in that ear. I also had vertigo and nausea. I did not want to go to a M.D. because I knew he would prescribe antibiotic. So, I thought I would let nature takes its course. The symptoms did not go away. In late June I went to a holistic chiropractor and in two weeks symptoms were gone.

I agree with Marian. Tinnitus is caused by poor circulation in the neck region. Get yourself to a osteopath. Edgar Cayce also recommended neck exercises first thing in the morning and
evening. Sitting in an upright position lower head forward
three times, back three times, right three times and left
three times. Then rotate the head clockwise three times and counterclockwise three times. Do this exercise slowly.

Hi, Jim.

This is arguably one of the most poorly treated conditions conventional physicians see.

The first thing to do is to rule out a structural cause for the "blocked eustacian tubes" (IF that is the cause, since there are other causes for tinnitus [see archives].) (Listen to Gen & Marion) and the next is to get rid of the most common allergens that cause this (dairy and wheat--in that order).

Let us know how you do.

I suppose I should back up and tell you more of my history on this nagging problem.About four months ago out of the blue I woke up and both ears were ringing. they rang all day until I went to sleep. I woke up the next day and it was gone. then a couple of weeks later, I wasn't feeling all that well so I took a famous OTC medicine. (famous for knocking people out due to its alcohol content)The next morning both of my ears were ringing out of my head and have been ever since (4 months and counting)Initially I thought the medicine did it to me but being 4 months into it, I clearly can see that it is something else. I went to see two ENT's they both told me (looking in my ears with fancy gadgets, one of them blowing my ear up gently with a air pump while looking deep inside my ear)that my ears are fine on the inside no excessive wax, blockage, and can see right to the ear drum. They both also told me the ringing is due to me loosing my hearing and will have to live it the rest of my life. One doctor told me that my brain is searching for the high pitch frequencies and can't "find them" I do have hearing loss in both ears.(loss of high pitch hearing) My left ear being worse than my right. My left ear has a constant feeling of being "plugged" up. Sometimes it feels like it opens up but quickly goes back to being with the plugged up,fullness feeling. I had an MRI the only thing that showed up on that was a cyst in my left maxillary sinus. The doctor said it has nothing to do with my ringing. When I swallow I can feel both of my ears popping so that is a good sign right? doesn't that mean that my eustachian tubes are working? GEN states that it could be poor circulation in the neck. My thought to this is I have a pinch nerve at the base of the neck on the left side(I have had it since I was about ten, doctor confirmed)I am wondering if this may have anything to do with my tinnitus? About a month or so before all this ringing started, my pinched nerved landed me in the doctors office. I could not even move my head. The doc gave me some heavy duty pain killers and muscle relaxers -I went home and alternated with ice, heat and massage for three days. Ever since that day, my pinch nerve still bothers me but not like it did a few months ago. Sorry for this huge, drawn out letter but I really think it will help with others diagnosing the problem and possible solutions. Currently I am taking your advice and getting off of dairy & wheat products. Thanks for everyone's time in reading this terribly long post. God bless-Jim

Hi Jim,

Deep tissue massage on your neck on a regular basis sounds like a good idea, also have you started doing SR (see glossary)?

Best wishes,
Happygal (Certified Massage Therapist)

Hi, Jim.

Happygal is probably right. Do you know if you are clenching your masseter muscles?

The most likely thing is that this is related to bracing in some way and that your cervical disk may be contributing.

If massages and/or Rolfing do not resolve it, I would suggest your seeing a Cranial Osteopath in consultation.

If all else fails self-hypnosis training is your best bet to get rid of the annoying tinnitus sound. Unfortunately this would do nothing about the cause and I think you have to deal with that first.

Let us know what you learn and how you do.

Walt
