Earwax Problems / Buildup. What should I do???

Posted by Dizzy on October 23, 2003 at 13:21:11:

Dr. Stoll:

I have had earwax problems for as long as I can remember. I remember as a little girl a big chunk of wax falling out of my left ear, and also being able to hear earwax move around in there when I lay down.

Recently, I had my earwax sucked out by a machine vacuum by an ear specialist. It was not pleasant, but it worked...what he got out was amazing! Big, huge chunks! And the dizziness seemed to go away.

Anyway, it's been about six months, and I am dizzy again. I've tried to use some earwax softner with a little flusher thing, but have not had any luck. My husband looks in there with a flashlight and says in my left ear, there is a huge chunk way back there.

Do you think it's normal for one to have to go to the doctor to get their earwax sucked out every year or so? I mean, what should I do? I've totally stopped using Q-Tips. I think the reason I've recently been dizzy is because a few days ago I scratched the inside of my ear with my pinky (it itched). I didn't think it was small enough to push wax back, but since then I've been dizzy.

How should I be getting the wax out so it doesn't build up if I am not supposed to be using Q-tips?

Thank you.

Murine makes an ear wax removal kit. You can get it at the drugstore and it has drops to soften the wax, and a bulb to rinse the ear with warm water.

My husband has the exact same problem and the ear wax softener kits don't work for him. He's tried several methods to try and control this all to no avail. He has to go about 2-3 times a year and have his ear flushed out. It's the only thing that works.

I read this:

Ear Wax Buildup Information and Ear Wax Removal Products

Ear wax is naturally produced to coat the ear canal in order to prevent cracks and infections and to keep dirt from passing to the ear drum. Some people produce to much ear wax and in some situations the ear wax may become too thick. Over time excess ear wax may build up and require removal. When the wax builds up hearing may be impaired, infection may occure, and occasionally vertigo may result. The ear wax buildup may require to be softened or loosend prior to removal, as the dried ear wax may stick to the skin of the ear canal, and can cause intense pain, bleeding, eardrum perforation and infections if removed before softening.

Removing excess ear wax
Soften ear wax - A herbal liquid drop may be used to both soften the ear wax and to help fight any infection in the ear canal.

Remove ear wax - Ear Candles have been used for centuries to safely remove ear wax from ears. Ear candles are actually a cone shaped device that uses light air suction to gently remove excess ear wax from the ear canal. By placing the tapered end in the ear & lighting the top it warms the ear canal & creates a vacuum pulling out earwax and deposits it inside the cone. It’s that simple! You’ll be surprised to see how much comes out.

Prevent ear wax buildup - earwax buildup is difficult to prevent as ear wax is naturally produced by our bodies. ear drops may be used to continue to dissolve some of the ear wax buildup and regular ear coning may be used to keep the ear canal free from excessive ear wax buildup.

I think Dr. Stoll will recommend you start taking the EFA's as outlined in the Articles at the top of the BB. I know they help soften sebum and that may also help release the wax instead of hardening and collecting in your ear.

I'm sorry -- where are the EFA articles located? What does EFA mean?

Hi, Dizzy.

Some people, genetically, make harder and drier ear wax that does not clean itself. You are one.

You need to get your ears professionally syringed at least every 6 months.

If you did it every 3 months at home (with one of the ear wax softener and rubber syringe kits) it would probably be enough. My guess is that the EFAS will extend this time considerably within about 3 months. Listen to Sally about the EFAs on the home page.

Let us know how you do.

Walt

Once I reached my late forties, I have had to go to the doctor about twice a year to get my ears cleaned. He uses a dry method by just going in and scraping it out. I cannot abide the water flush method, it makes it worse. I just accept it and when I feel my ears are clogged I don't bother with at home treatments, I just go get the wax professionally removed. Sometimes I can go eight months without a cleaning. When I was younger I never had to ever have my ears professionally cleaned, it is just when I got older. I am now 57. maryann

Actually I did a research of ear candles,.(and used them) .they do not remove ANY ear wax,...you can get "ear wax" by burning them holding them tight angainst a table. what you see that looks like ear wax is hydrocarbons from the burning process ,..try it if you want,..
