WAX IN EARS

Posted by arh on March 05, 2001 at 22:21:12:

My 3 year old son was having trouble hearing me and it appeared there was wax in his ears, so we started putting Debrox in them and it cleared up. That was about 8 months ago. He seems to have the problem again. Is there another way to remove the wax and what might be causing it? Allergies?

My son had this problem too when he was that little and since I was unaware of it for some time he missed out on hearing a lot of important sounds and now has speech delays. The wax in his ears would get very hard and was very hard to remove. Several times his pediatrician had to use instruments to remove part of it. I found that hydrogen peroxide helps "bubble" the wax out and the doctor agreed that this was a good method to use. Have your son lay his head on a pillow while you place a few drops of HP in his ear and have him sit still for a few minutes and see if this helps. I'm not sure what causes the build up of wax but my son is going on 8 years old now and does not seem to have any more problems with it.

Hi, arh.

This is a genetic tendency to produce hard wax and sometimes does change as the child gets older (see Trish's note) but sometimes even adults have it for life.

The solution is to use any wax softening drops about once a month and then gently syringing (with warm water) the wax out several days later. They have special kits at the drug store for just this purpose.

If you have any trouble, do not despair since everyone does in the beginning. Practice makes perfect.

Let us know how you do.

Walt
