TINNITUS

Posted by TOM T on May 18, 2001 at 08:44:42:

I TOO DEVELOPED developed TINNITUS SOME MONTHS AGO its annoying as heck- i went to an ent doc- he is pretty well versed in it ( he told me he has had it for 20 years) he says no cure , he just learned to ignore it. he also said he has done studies which shows there is a good chance it will simply go away in many cases usually within the first year. he also did a study where several hundred "normal " asymptomatic people were put in a special sound proof booth and were asked what they heard and 98% said they heard ringing in the head and ears. ie he feels that "sound " is there in everyone, but something happens e.g trauma, loud noise , wax build up, infection, slight hearing loss etc which irritates or damages the nerves in the inner ear area and this makes the sound( electrical activity of the brain and ears) sound louder and then perceptable. he states sometimes the damage heals itself, sometimes it doesnt.i know 2 people who had it pretty bad for close to a year and then it slowly dissipated into nothing. i also know other people who have had it for 15 to 20 years and taught themselves to completely ignore it and it doesnt bother them at all anymore.they dont "fear" it as a bad sound.

Hi, Tom.

If your problem does not go away on it's own, I would suggest you see a Cranial Osteopath in consultation (see the archives) and, if that is not successful, use self-hypnosis (the most consistantly successful treatment for this).

Let us know how you do.

Walt

My left ear is completely deaf from a brain tumor 20 years
ago. I have continuing and relentless tinnitus both
ears, even though there is no "hearing" in the left one.
It's a mysterious and no-win affliction. Do your best;
try to make friends with it.
Hearing, or lack of it, seems to have no bearing.
Like certain viruses; once you get 'em, you have 'em for life.
