Recently I had to fly with a head cold and my one ear still has not popped...over 2 days later. There is a lot of pain and it seems like there is fluid in my ear because I can feel differences when my head is in different positions. My doc said that it's an ear infection and gave me antibiotics (of course). Is it really possible that I could develop an ear infection over the course of 30 minutes as the plane was descending? It was fine prior to that. Any help would be greatly appreciated. (I read the archives on earaches and nothing was really pertinent)
thanks!

Hi Jane - Both my son and my daughter have gotten bad ear infections from flying on a plane when they had a cold and were prescribed antibiotics.
The pressure from the fluid caused my daughter's eardrum to burst. She was in terrible pain and did take antibiotics, but not until after her eardrum had burst. Her ear had fluid in it for a long time. and she had trouble hearing with that ear. She didn't see a doctor soon enough, which caused the eardrum to burst. You are fortunate that this didn't happen to you. Hope you feel better soon! Raisa

I definetly have experienced that and found when i fly if i'm at all congested in anyway i buy a nose spray and spray up the nose and it helps a lot; Earaches a lot of time are caused by the catarrh [mucus built up] You might try the homepathic tissue salt [bought in any health food store and harmless] called Kali Sulph. It helps the Catarrh and distressing earache; The other tissue salt needed perhaps is the Nat. Mur. for Roaring in the ears, dullness of hearing with watery symptoms; You can buy a little tissue salt book and it will guide you thru what and how to take them, they taste like sugar and children like them;

Hi, Jane.
Listen to Terri-Lynn (Thanks, Terri-Lynn!) Also Raisa has something to say.
No one with a "cold" or allergy should fly without first using the nasal spray Terri-Lynn talks about. Oxymetolazine 0.05% is one of the long lasting ones (8-10 hours).
A blocked eustacian tube causes all of this to happen and when it is made worse by the elevation, the fluid locked in the ear by the mechanism THEN makes the person more susceptible to infection. One does NOT get an infection from the elevation.
Once this has gone on long enough, the nasal spray cannot get the eustacian tube open and then, a good ENT person can insufflate the tube with a special instrument OR open the drum to let the pressure out. If that is done within a day or so, there will be no infection.
Of course, the best thing is to avoid the problem with the nasal spray.
Hope this helps.
Walt

Hi, I had forgotten that my daughter's ENT told her to buy "Afrin" and use it as the plane was taking off and landing (one hour before each).

First of all if yoiu have this problem there is a cure.
Take a sterofoam cup, and put a couple of napkins in it.
Than pour the boiling water in it.
Than put your ear over the cap, and be sure not cup over the ear to prevent accidental burning.
There is no better treatment than steam! for ear and eye infections.
I used it when on long flight when my ear will not clear.
I was told about it by stewardess on intercontinental flight and it works!
Always consult with Diane Fairechild, a poisoned by UNITED stewadess who now have wonderfull books after being defrauded by UNITED shysters.
Boycot UNITED and do not fly on this CON Airline!
They injured more peiople due to spraying pesticides on their plaines than any one can imagine.
They defraud the airline employees who are than becoming sick as result of pesticides abuse.
