painful lump behind ear(bony part)

Posted by NT on May 31, 2001 at 16:48:41:

Hi,
I have had burning and some popping in my ears for a
few weeks. My ears outside feel red hot. I also keep
getting pain in my head and neck and feel dizzy. In the
last few days a lump has appeared at the back of my
ear on the bony part, this also feels sore.

I went to my docs today and he said no infection there
and said the bony lump was a swollen gland.

Any ideas

Hi, NT.

I would not worry about the node but the doc who saw you missed the diagnosis about your ears. Your eustacian tubes are being blocked and he missed it.

The most common cause is allergy but stuff like TMJ, etc. can also do it. You need to see a good doc or an ENT specialist to figure this out.

Let us know what you learn.

Hi Dr. Stoll,
Is there any natural product that would help unblock
them?

Thank you

thats a good question i have most of the same symptoms plus ringing in my ears . do you have ringing also/? and does the popping happen when you yawn , swallow and sometimes just out of the blue? let me know if you find anything. this is very annoying.i tried ginko. someone suggest nose spray while tilting your head back , but im too afraid to try it.there has to be some safe way to unblock the tubes, this is ridiculaous it doesnt seem like it should be hard to do. i saw 2 ents and they were pretty much stupid and didnt care."have to live with it"

Thanks, June.

The actual maneuver to open the eustacian tubes with nose drops is in the archives about ears. It is NOT "tilting you head back" which would almost guarantee failure.

Nose drops are still a temporary solution that helps. The cause(s) must be identified and removed for permanent results.
