ear problem

my right ear will occasionally have a problem where it feels like it is open right into my sinuses and when I breath it feels like the air is rushing right past my eardrum. It drives me insane and makes me talk strangely. If I turn my head upside down or tilt it way back it will close but then if I swallow it comes right back. I have gone to physicians but never a specialist. They usually give me nose drops which do nothing. this problem usually occurs if I yawn alot or if my nose is running and I sniff too hard. It usually lasts for several hours. Do you know what this could be, or know how I can stop it from happening??

Hi, LH.

This is from that eustacian tube being more open than usual. I have occasionally, had the same experience. This, too, shall pass. This is a LOT better than the opposite.

No problemo!

Now that you've mentioned it, my son is STILL having the "opposite". He started having problems with his ears not popping when we took our trip late June/early July. They still aren't opening up or releasing that pressure! I truly thought once we got home it would stabilize on its own but it didn't. I don't know what to do. Poor kid is still avoiding swallowing and flapping at his ears. This won't be permanent, will it?

No, kmd, it is not likely to be permanent.

However, the longer it remains the more trouble it is likely to be.

The nose drops (see sinuses or ear archives), used regularly every 8 hours--in the ear position--might resolve it in a week or so.
