Hi, I am a 16 year old girl and I am hoping you can give me your advice on what you think i might have and what to do about it. For about two weeks I have had a sore throat. Then, a few days ago I woke with a rash and my eyes extremly swollen. So my mom took me to the doctors. He said he feels that I have Strep and put me on an antibiotic called Cefzil. I have been on it for about 4 days and have I have gotten worse. My tonsils are huge and have mucus spots all over them. My nose is extremly stuffy and its very hard to get it out but when I do its yellow and thick. My whole neck is swollen and my lymph nodes. I get sweaty one minutue and chills the next. My throat is so bad I can no longer eat or drink even soft foods. It hurts too bad and plus food gets caought in between my tonsils. I can not sleep at night either so that does not help me trying to get better. However, the rash did go away but everything else is still there and its getting worse. Someone said something to me about me maybe having mono or getting my tonsils removed. Well i am hoping you will know what this may be. Please write me back asap. thank you a lot... Meghan

Dr. stoll will answer your question shortly but for now i'd just like to add a few things from my personal experience with mono.
It's sounds to me (from all the symptoms your describing) that you may have mono. The only way to be sure is to goto your Doctor and get a blood test. I'm surprised that your Doctor hasn't already done that. Do you get a pain under your left rib cage when you breathe deep. If so, that is an indication that you have a swollen spleen and this is another major symptom of mono. When i had mono my throat swelled up so bad that i had to be put on prednisone to take the swelling down. I'm by no means trying to scare you or anything. I just think you should go get that blood test as soon as possible before it gets any worse (If) it is mono.

Just out of curiosity, have you seen an ear/nose/throat doctor? You should let the doctor know that you have gotten worse on the Cefzil and be reevaluated since things have changed. An ENT specialist would be a good idea as well.

You should go back to the Dr. Sounds like the anti-biotic is not working at all...(not unusual) you need another anti-biotic. You might need a culture done on your throat too to see if you really have strep. Have you told your mom your getting worse.

I can tell you, I've been working in Atlanta and in Tenn., that is where i am now, working with people's health issues; It is going around, just what you discribed, many have strep and flu like symptoms and congestion. [season changing] Now the rash i think is just some toxins coming out as your body, it is purging, getting rid off what does not belong in your body;
Now a man in the house i'm in had strep very bad and before i came his doctor gave him a shot and an antibiotic and then i came in and got him on vegetable soups and vegetable juices and lots of liquids, including saline solution water with a mineral salt; This is his third day and his fever is gone and strep about gone and is able to eat solid foods better, but we are starting with soft things like some of the hubbard type squash; The key is to get your body alkaline and drink plenty of juices that are low on the sugars, like there is a black cherry juice in the health food section of the grocrey store that is great for you [has all the minerals and vit. in it] and making some mild vegetable juices is nice if you have a juicer; I started him on Zinc lozengers and that is helping his throat; Now is is taking some Advil i believe also at times; This is the third family i have been with where someone in the family has had this same thing. Each house i was in we did the same thing and got the virus or whatever is going around turned around; If i can help you any more let me know. From the travleing health practitioner-ha!

Sounds like you may be dehydrated, on top of everything else. Drinking water and other healing liquids as Terri-Lynn described will help to thin your sinus/nasal secretions and reduce the stuffiness so you can breathe and sleep.

Hi, Meghan.
You probably have mono! I am surprised your doc has not tumbled to the diagnosis by now--unless you have not shared what is happening with him! With mono, antibiotics commonly make the problem worse.
let us know what you learn. The Mono Spot test might not have been positive early in the condition but a regular EBV titer would have been. After this length of time any test would be positive.
