I have a question. I am a college student, and I was diagnosed with mono about five months ago. In the last two weeks I have seen my doctor and he told me I am better. However, he also told me to be carefull till about christmas to avoid a re-lapse. I feel perfect right now, but I had a bad case that took me a while to recover from. I also have been working out for about the last two months and that hasn't really seemed to affect me. My question is how should I approach the fall quarter because I know I am going to want to go out and party and drink. However I don't want to get a re-lapse at the same time. How can I still have fun at school while avoiding a re-lapse? Also is there any way I should approach lifing weights/working out this fall?

Joe,
I think what Dr. Stoll would tell you is to read the archives on mono and EBV.
I can, however, tell you of my experience with Mono and what helped me. I was diagnosed 2 years ago, the first time it stayed for 4 months, then I had a relapse every six months till I found this site.
Basically if you get mono, your immune system is in bad shape, so you need do what you can to help it (even if your not sick right now). This is my advice and what helped me:
1) do the three steps talked about on this site (Skilled relaxation, eat whole foods, work out) Skilled relaxation is the most important, its hard to get in the habit of doing it twice a day but I believe it has helped me tremendously.
Also, when working out, Start out REALLY slowly, you can really knock yourself down and make it possible to get sick again if you over do it.(Ive done this)
2)Buy some esterfied vitamin c,(make sure its esterfied) take a lot of it every day (toxicity level is 12 grams, I took around 6)It helps A LOT, keeps your immune system healthy. Some people get intraveinous(sp?) shots of vit c. I personally dont believe in needles.
I think if you do these things you could eventually get your immune system healthy enough so you could drink occasionally, as long as you didnt over do it. (a lot of people on this site would probably disagree with me though and say just dont drink its bad for you, which it is, but hey....I remember college)
One other thing, I also started taking SBO's, it is supposed to super jump start your immune system---I feel like a million bucks since I started them. If you want to know more about them you can e-mail me. Sorry this turned out so long.
Good luck!

Great post, with one tiny exception. Vitamin C is NOT toxic at 12 grams. If you take more vitamin C than your body can absorb, then what cannot be absorbed just passes right thru and causes diahrea. In fact, some people use this to determine their optimum dose when they are sick. They take a LOT, then they start cutting back till the diahrea stops. Or they take more and more each day till they get diahrea, then they cut back some till it just stops.
Esterfied Vitamin C is what Walt recommends. Lots about it in the archives. My bottle says "Ester-C" Buy it most anywhere that sells vitamins, even Wal-Mart.
Do spread your Vitamin C out over the day instead of taking it all at one time. You can take a lot more that way without problems. And the sicker you are, the more Vitamin C you can take without getting diahrea. I posted a table here one time that showed how much Vitamin C a person could safely take, based on different illnesses. This was not theoretical, but was based on records kept by a physician from his patients over 30 years. The numbers were HUGE! It's probably archived by now.
Hope this helps!

I recall reading the article you referenced - it must have been you that posted it. It was about reaching your bowel tolerance level of vitamin c and then backing off from that level. The cool part was that when you were actually sick, your tolerance level would increase by many-fold. I thought it was a great article but can't find it again. Can you re-post it or put it in your glossary (under Vitamin C?)?
Thanks.

Thanks, Michele.
Your testimonial will help others. I DO, however, agree with RHJ about the "toxicity of vitamin C". I would bet that you meant that YOUR tolerance level was 12 grams.
We will archive this under EBV so others can be benefitted by your experience.

RHJ,
I did NOT know that! I swear I remember reading somewhere that 12 grams was toxicity level. oh well, thanx for the info! I stand corrected.

Can vitamin c make one more acidic if they already have problems with acid reflux?.

Hi, Sue.
Of course, you know that GERD is not caused by too much acid in the stomach. However, if the reflux feels worse while taking vitamin C, just switch to esterified vitamin C.
Even buffered vitamin C would help.
However, your best bet is still to get rid of the LGS that is causing the GERD.
