Dear Katnip,
Your best bet would be to call your library and speak to the reference librarian. Tell him/her that you need to understand the basics of mononucleosis and which book do they have that would provide that information.
Basically, mononucleosis is caused by a very weak virus (which no one with a normally healthy immune system can get). The virus is called the "epstein Barr Virus". Those with the weak immune systems keep this virus slightly active for many years and frequently feel even worse than you do now for many years. That is where the term "Chronic Epstein Barr Virus" comes from.
This is one reason why it is called the "kissing disease". It is such a weak virus that it takes very prolonged & intimate contact to transfer it even to someone with reduced immunity.
Once you understand what I am saying, and you think you are willing to improve your immunity (the only thing that will permanently resolve this), write again with any questions.
I will be glad to help. This is not something anyone but you can do.
Walt

Dear Brian,
Mononucleosis is the acute phase of Chronic EBV. They are caused by the same virus and are basically the same disease. Both have been discussed extensively on this BB for years. Look at the archives & THEN, if you have more questions, write again.

Dear Allison,
Sounds enough like mono to me that you would be wise to get a mono test at the doc's.
Let us know what you learn.

Dear Walt,
Recently, my friend has been diagnosed with Mononeucleosis. She and my grandmother shared a drink. I think that my grandmother may have Mono. She's been tired and has been constanly sleeping. Her throat, upper back, leg, and arm joints hurt. She does not have the issurance or the money to visit a doctor. Please help. What can I do to help her healing process? What are the effects of Mono in the body? Will there be any dramatic consequences if she does not see a doctor? thank you for your time.

Hi, Quily.
Mononucleosis is traditionally treated with bed rest and a healthy diet. Surely your friend can do this without going to (and paying) the doctor. The natural history of the condition can last for months if the person does not do that.
In MY experience, I have had 100% resolution of mono with 100 grams of IV vitamin C daily for 3-5 days. Good luck in finding a physician what knows how to do that! Also, that could cost from $50-100 per treatment--depending on how altruistic the doc is.
Finally, there are other conditions that are a lot more serious that can cause these symptoms. If this has lasted more than a couple of weeks your friend really needs to have a blood test and an examination to be sure that it IS as simple as mono.
It is rare for anyone over the age of 50 to have mono. I seriously doubt that your friend caught this from your grandmother.
Depending on the lifestyle of the individual, this can become chronic and last for years.
Walt
