I had a confirmed case of Mono at age 16 that lasted about a month. I am now 32 and have a second confirmed case which has so far lasted 4 months and not seeming to get better. June of this year my throat was so swollen I wanted to just have it removed. I went to a Dr. who at that time tested me for Mono and Strep and both were neg. He then gave me zithromax which made me well again. Then just 6 weeks later my neck swelled again, went to the Doc and Mono is positive. Should I be worried that I have another case of Mono when all that I read states you only get it once? I am going to try the ester C and maybe I can get well in time to save my job.

Hi, Steph.
This is NOT mono but recurrent EBV.
Go to the archives link I have prepared for you below and learn what you have. THEN, if you still have questions, write again.

Ok, the weird thing is ...after my doc said I have Mono for the second time (Bah! Humbug!), I spoke to my friend who had all of the same symptoms as myself and I urged her to get the Mono-Spot test and she too has it but for the first time. I had been with her a couple of weeks prior to the onset of my (and her) symptoms at her work party where the both of us converesed for a few hours with a woman who had been hospitalized for Mono, along with her son, a few months prior. I am confused as to how being around her would make me feel this bad and test positive for Mono again when I was tested neg three months prior. Sorry to drag this out but I am confused and curious.
Thanks Mr. Doc Walt. I really appreciate your response.

Steph,
The question you are asking is answered in the link Dr. Stoll gave you to research. You didn't test positive from talking to someone. The problem is you and your friend's immune system. I would be good if you clicked the "Ask Dr. Stoll" link at the top of the page. That will put you on the bulletin board. From there you can click on the "Articles on Health" link. From those articles, choose "How To Be Healthy". This outlines Dr. Stoll's advice on maintaining optimal health. Check out the glossary also. Read. Chronic EBV would not be good.

Hi, Steph.
This has been discussed on this BB several times but here goes again:
Once anyone has had ANY viral infection (EBV stands for Epstein-Barr Virus---the virus that causes "mono") that virus stays in every cell of that person's body for the rest of their life. It is only their immunity to that virus (learned during the initial infection) that keeps it under control.
Your present condition came from your own stored virus and NOT from a new exsposure! This is why I suggested you do some reading on in the archives. You are going to have to understand this a lot better than your "doc" does if you are to keep it from happening again and again and again.
What happens to the doc's income if you have it again and again and again????

I apologize for being stupid, I guess. I did not see anywhere in the archives about somebody coincidently having a recurrance of EBV after they just happen to be around at least two other people with Mono. And for the record I am well aware of the fact that you don't catch anything from the act of a conversation itself.
Thanks for.........?

Hi, Steph.
TOTAL coincidence EXCEPT for the fact that the same environmental factors that could produce mono in a first time person are the same ones that would also allow the reawakening of the virus stored in any second time person.
A first time person cannot "catch" the EBV from a second time person. The second time person is immune to the virus from any first time person.
Hope this is making sense to you.
Be careful not to fall into the common simplistic trap all medical students are warned about: "Post hoc, ergo propter hoc."----"After this, therefore because of this."
