EBV/MONO and Athletes

Posted by Matt on December 18, 1998 at 09:56:27:

Dr. Stoll,

I just found this site and ordered your book. I read all the back posts on this subject. I am 26 years old and have had EBV for 10 months. I am a competeive cyclist, and I believe through physical stress I brought this on. I did not find out I had this until 5 months ago. I knew somthing was wrong 5 months before. I stopped sleeping well and was fatigued all the time and had chronic illnesses. I continued to train and push myself unitl I was told by my HMO doctor that I had mono and EBV. By this time I had really driven myself in a hole. I had a swollen spleen and glands, which I think is consistant with mono. My EBV test on 7-31-98 said I had a "current infection". I also had all the indicators of depression and the Phyc department put me on Serzone 300 mg Trazadone 50mg @ night and Klonopin for the anxeity that I was having through out the night. I have since got off the Trazadone and I am almost done tappering klonopin. Three months later after resting as much as I could and all but quit exercising I went back to my HMO feeling good. This time the test came back negative for one of the antibodies and positve for one. EBNA was still negative. The note from the lab said "Rescent infection". I started back excersising for four weeks but keeping it very mellow. I was feeling good then bam CFS hit me hard again, Sleep disturbences and I can hardley get out of bed. My glands are swollen and and my HMO doctor probed my stomach with his hads and found my spleen swollen and this time my lower gut area hurt to the touch? He ran a ton of tests, urine, CBC, liver, bun, creatine. The only one that was high was bun. Is he missing something? I guess my question is should I go back to complete bed rest when I have a flare up? I take as much vit c as I can handle some days it is 15,000mg and others 35,000mg. I also take a ton of vitaims and herbs. I should mention I believe that my immune system is working great with the Vit C. I have been around a ton of people with illnesses and I have not even got a sniffle this cold season.

Sorry for the long post

i hope walt doesnt mind me putting my 2 cents in ( listen hard to his advice). your post attracted me as i too am an athlete ( runner)and was hit with the same "disease" you have and i am trying to recover 100% ( i'm about 95% recovered now after following walts advice.i was just about left for dead prior to using his wellness plan )after learning so much about this condition from this board and from experience its uncanny to me 1)how many "healthy" seeming people fall into this trap 2) how conventional doctors miss the boat with treatment every single time. i know many people personally who have what we have and i have never seen anyone ever get well with the idiotic methods prescribed by allopathic closed minded doctors i.e pump you full of pills to treat the symptoms, no wonder you relapsed. when is all this nonsense going to stop?i cant imagine the number of people stumbling around for years if not their whole lives, not finding the right advice. by the way i wouldnt be so sure your immune system is ok. almost everyone i know with cfs etc doesnt get colds. i may be that your immune system is on overdrive. maybe not. good luck.

Hi, Matt.

Listen to bw.

Also, your current findings tell me that your "three-legged stool of wellness" has one very long leg (exercise), one short leg (vitamins & herbs) an one totally missing leg (SR).

Is it any wonder that your stool is wobbly????? Your situation is a great example of the need for balance.

Your history is typical of chronic EBV which you could not have if your immune system was not pretty stressed. In the end, the approach is not to "treat" the EBV but to address WHY you would be susceptible. The EBV will take care of itself. I am glad that you have my book; it would be a good place to start resolving this AND prevent this kind of thing ever happening again.

Until you turn the corner with this, I would continue to be "reasonable" with your exercise. Combining the SR with your moderate exercise would do you a lot more good than all the exercise you could possibly do anyhow.

Let us know how you do.

Walt

Dear jodi,

You need a lot better understanding of why one would get mono and why someone might end up with chronic EBV.

Go to the archives for this BB & read everything you can find about EBV.

THEN, if you still have questions write again.

Walt
